You can't believe your eyes and I can't believe my ears, but Weightless is actually really disappointing...Boring, low string riffs accompanied by flurries of high string work are just not going to cut it this time (especially when every band and their mother is doing the same thing). You'd think that being in a proper trio, Tosin and co. would have perhaps made something that would rival even their debut but damn it's barely even competition.

Musically and compositionally flawless. A timeless masterpiece flecked only by a few moments of hiccups in the production, which to many is a trivial matter. An album that will change the very definition of Heavy Metal and its impact on its listeners. An album that will define a decade. Animals as Leaders will be a household name in years to come.

So you guys are only able to rate this relative to the self titled album? Sure its not quite as mind blowing as the debut but its still really good and Tosin and Company still bring something very unique and impressive to the table. Being a band like AAL and playing a very niche style of music I dont think its fair to expect them to be able to reinvent themselves with every album, quit your moaning and enjoy it.

It's difficult to not like this album a lot, as they are one of my favorite musical groups but this album pales in comparison to the self titled. It's a frustrating "progression" as there are little slivers of awesomeness to be found on the album, but they're usually drowned by drawn out and mundane verses. A lot more electronic stuff to be found on the album, and while it adds on certain tracks (like Odessa), often times it gets stretched out for too long and gets annoying. For example on the opener track, from 1:50 to 2:45, what is otherwise an awesome track gets a huge chunk of boring, uninspired garbage thrown in the middle of it. rIt feels like they had some moments of inspiration and strung them together with useless filler. A mostly boring and disappointing culmination in what was one of my most anticipated releases of the year. r

I like how people are basing their biases off of their first self-titled album. You write a review with nothing going in and taking each element of each song to heart and then making a rational opinion based on what is given to you. I love their new material. It isn't flashy like off their self-titled, which is absolutely fine, you don't have to always one-up yourself to play stuff that they enjoy playing. All three of these guys are talented beyond belief and they continue to impress me with this album. rGood job, noobs.

AAL trim down the shredage and focus more on songwriting structure with Weightless. It's apparent that this is def. a more bandcentric release and less the Tosin Abasi show. The band puts more focus on grooving riffs, tasteful leads, and abstract jazzy and electronic passages. The fast shredding still pops in here but it's done even more tastefully and fits much better in the realm of the song-and therefore makes it much more hard hitting. The album also benefits from a gorgeous production and a much more concise flow So unless you miss the shreddage of their debut there is honestly very little reason that you would like Weightless less. It is overall the better structured album, and sure many "djent" bands are doing the same groove-meets-shreds-meet electronica segue but no one right now is taking it to abstract level of creativity and making it all flow concisely and beautifully like AAL, and Weightless proves that in an unabashedly manner.

Weightless is more experimental and has more atmosphere than s/t but sometimes lapses into dullness and feels a tad uninspired. Still a decent listen and there are some great songs on here but overall it's underwhelming.

Good, if not a bit hollow. It's simply not the grandiose metal meets flamenco on an 8 string guitar sound anymore. It's become this pseudo-electronic jam noise. Maybe it's because they're trying to dedicate more presence to the drum and bass work (and it's good stuff), but the sound feels lacking compared to the debut.

As much of an AAL stan as I was for many years, I can't heap praise onto the all-important sophomore effort the 'group' launched way back when. Weightless is even more of an exercise in Tosin's individuality as a performer than the excellent self-titled debut as he is the only member to demonstrate any sort of vitality - and even that might be overstatement. Besides an uninspired, half-digital rhythm section, Tosin's leads are occasionally gorgeous but mostly soulless. We're fortunate that AAL picked it up with their next release.

Animals As Leaders, as full to the brim with technical aptitude and noticeable passion as they are, have managed to be one of the most consistently enjoyable bands in this cleanly-produced style of progressive metal, and Weightless shows that very well, albeit probably less than their other records. The atmosphere is simple, but it's pretty enough, and the impressive technicality is as good as ever. The detriments here mainly stem from the notion that this record, aside from a slightly more electronic and ambient feel to things, follows the same path that it's predecessor did. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but on an album where the songs are hard to differentiate from each other, much less from the songs on the predecessor, some variety would've helped things very much. Still, this is an enjoyable effort from the band, it's just been done better both before and since by the same group of dudes.

Tosin Abasi, Javier Reyes and Navene Koperweis take a completely different approach in their second record and take a completely different direction. Is this the band you adored for their hypnotizing melodies and clever musicality in "Animals As Leaders"? It is, but in it's organic and minor form and most average shape. Does that make a terrible record? No. Although boring at times, a great record nontheless.

I'm thinking this album would deserve a 3.8 or a 3.9. In my opinion, it doesn't hold a candle to the Self Titled album. But there are still some really cool sounding riffs and writing in this album. To be honest, he seems to have gotten better at tapping and slap guitar. Its just a shame he couldn't have wrote it with a more jazzy feel rather then a more electronic feel.

This album is a perfect representation of the state of modern music. The line is being blurred between
computer manipulation and human performance. Tosin's incredible two handed tapping, bass like slapping,
and multi voice playing only further confuses the listener, as we try and discern on the record what is digital
editing and what is his amazing virtuosic playing. While the record is a lot heavier than expected, the
songwriting has also become more complex. Its incredible to listen to Tosin further develop his unique
approach to playing the guitar, while also mastering his abilities as a jazz/progressive metal composer. He is
truly one of the great guitarists of the modern age.

Excellent musicianship as usual, and musicianship is up to another level, especially on Navene's part. Too much electronic influence though, and you can hear it for sure. Feels a tad uninspired a bit too often. Still an excellent spin, and they're improving on ~some~ of the mistakes from their first album. Look to taking the best parts of both and adding something new in their future albums. Production needs a lot of work.

After first listen, completely underwhelming. The incredible build-ups found on the s/t are lacking here. As much as I think Bulb's music is boring and sterile (not unlike some of the material on Weightless) it seems more and more apparent that his production (but especially) his help with arrangements made Tosin Abasi's music what it was on the s/t. Take that away and you have you this - a very disorganized and underwhelming experience.
