@TheSadLittleDinosaur Kurt's vocals are by far the biggest departure from DGD I think he is capable of. La dispute in the guitar??? are you just naming the first band you can think of that incorporates progressive ideas and reverb/delay in heavy music? I swear musical opinions on these sites are a formula. Take what is popular/cool to like at the moment, mention it in comment about new music, earn indie cred.

I was a bit worried when some of the songs we heard before this was out were a little too poppy compared to Plan B, but luckily those few songs we heard seem to be the only ones that were poppy. This album has just as many unique, awe-inspiring moments as Plan B, and at the same time manages to showcase a completely different side of A Lot Like Birds. The addition of Kurt Travis was definitely a positive, having him seems to have caused a sense of urgency in the songwriting that simply wasn't there on Plan B and every band member shines on this album. One of the best releases of 2011.

I originally had this labeled as a 4.5 after my first listen. After spending more time with it I realized that this was definitely worthy of a 5. The DGD comparisons are inevitable, but this is better than anything DGD has released. A very creative album and the best post-hardcore album of 2011. Also, will someone please review this already?

At first listen, I can tell this is a good album. And maybe if I listen to it a little more, it could become great or even excellent. Problem is, I don't think I want to listen to it again. There's just something about the sound I can't stand.

Yeah, I thought people were saying these guys were going to become DGD clones? NOPE. Totally doing their own thing on this record, and it's pretty fucking good. The whole back and forward of the screaming and cleans is executed nicely. Riffs are awesome. Everything is good. 4 for now.

I do admit I rated this album higher than what I would really give, but I appreciate their efforts in giving out a really good collection of songs. This album has a lot of filler tracks, knowing that some songs were already written before Kurt's arrival. But I don't mind. In this album, I treat Cory and Kurt's vocals as instruments. Kurt was intently made to shine here, and I just hate that.

I enjoyed a few tracks on here enough for this to not get a 2.5, but in reality this record is very lacking. I suggest the tracks: Think Dirty Out Loud, Vanity's Fair, Truly Random Code, and Tantrum. The rest of the tracks for the most part are very boring and I expected a lot more than I got with this record.

Good, but a step back from Plan B. The vocals could have been an awesome addition, but instead they used them to replace the instruments. This would have been alright, but the way Kurt is trying to emulate DGD isn't getting it right. Overall I think the album had too much DGD influence in the vocals, too much La Dispute influence in the guitar, and not nearly enough experimentation. It also lacked the La Dispute/Circle Takes The Square/The Mars Volta style storytelling in the lyrics that it could have had (I felt like I could see them writing lyrics similar to those bands from what I heard on the first album) and the classic ALLB instrumental craziness it could have had.rIn short, they have descended into a lower form of Post-Harcore, and I for one am slightly disappointed.

These guys are clearly talented. The music never ceases to be interesting. Vanity Fair is an amazing song. I don't enjoy the long instrumental sections, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the album that much. Interested to hear more from this band. Ultimately I like DGD style more, but this is still a good record.

Came across this because I loved Kurt's work with DGD. I'm also a musician, drummer and guitar, who loved Mars Volta, Fall of Troy, and Closure in Moscow, all of whom seem to be similar to this style. In that respect, the musicanship is just mesmerizing. Extremely creative and highly technical, mentally stimulating, but with solid melodies and harmonies.rI also loved Kurt's performances on this album, especially the harmonies that he did, more creative than most who just sing a 4th or 5th above the main melody.rThe two drawbacks for me were the spoken interludes, which sometimes brought the music to a complete halt or killed the momentum. I don't really care for screaming for the most part either, but that's well done when accompanied by the music.rAlso, some of the interlude or transition tracks were unnecessary and always skipped. Those and intro tracks I can't stand on albums. Just give me 10 solid songs without any filler.rFavorite tracks, the first five and 8. Sounds like they let Closure in Moscow come in and record track 9, very strange.

past) proves that he is more varied vocalist in the genre than most. It fits. Instrumentally
it fits with Circa, Alchemy/Vheissu era Thrice, and Closure in Moscow. Solid album, written
really well for the most part.
