(8/28/18): A few roadblocks aside, Vulgar was a neat step in a different direction. Around that point, Dir En Grey were standardizing their core sound via gaining noticeable North American influences, and did a pretty damn good job at that. The following full-length, called Withering to death., was a natural progression - one which hinted at the ensemble getting even heavier and less willing to compromise, too. From a production standpoint, the fifth record sounded sleeker; in terms of musicianship, instrumental passages remained tight whilst also achieving some new level of meticulous planning; and as far as the vocals went, Kyo was at his most professional state. Withering to death. overall was an upgrade over its antecedent, however small the upgrades might've been.

I would personally suggest this album to anyone getting into Japanese rock as a first introduction. While it very much retains the visual kei elements that made DEG a household name in their native Japan, they managed to incorporate more "western" musical components to their already unique sound and deliver an album that both eastern an western audiences of rock and metal can appreciate and indulge into without problem.

With Withering To Death, Dir En Grey took the Western style found on Vulgar, and add a style more reminiscent of their Visual Kei beginnings. The heaviness is still here, but what's nice is that Dir En Grey have found their own sound in this, with their own unique guitar tunings that add a creepy, emotional edge. The emotional edge is increased with the more melodic choruses that are much more influenced by their native country's style (The Final is a good example). Add in Kyo's best vocals yet, and Withering To Death is the band's best album since Gauze.

Has a lot of progressive elements and experimental elements in almost every song along and they pull it off really well. The bass is audible throughout the album plus it has some killer parts as well, while the guitars have acquired their own unique style that they play almost gives it a "creepy" feel to some of the songs. The drums are just like the bass it has its moments. The vocals are outstanding you'll hear all types of vocal ranges from high pitched clean singing to brutal death growls to screeches to a normal singing style. Most of the time the choruses are catchy, and most songs average under 4 minutes. Imo it's definitely worth the listen.
