Jar Of Flies is proof that, had Alice In Chains been an entirely acoustic outfit, they'd have been even better than they were. Certainly, this is their best record. "Rotten Apple" must surely be the greatest song of all time to include financial advice ("Hey na-na-nah, recommend you borrow...."), and its 7 minutes don't feel like enough. "Nutshell" is plain fantastic - perfectly judged and executed. "I Stay Away" is more of the same, with added strings, and even some distortion. The EP never quite hits the height of those 3 brilliant opening tracks again, but it doesn't slouch, either. It would have sounded like a different band were it not for Stayley's voice, but this sums up why AiC were so great better than any of their full-lengths.

They take it down a notch with this EP, bust out the acoustic guitars, and kind of jam out for a while. The vocal styling of AIC we all know and love is still front and center. A perfect change of pace, and quite enjoyable.

This is a great album. It's a difficult album to rate because it's basically half an album. You can subtract Swing on This because it's a unanimously a crappy song. To be honest with you I rate the entire album based on the first 3 songs, because they're Classic. To be fair most people out there like No Excuses... it's honestly my least favorite Alice in Chains song and I've tried sooo hard to like it, but I absolutely detest it and of all things it was there first release off the album. The only reason why I even got the album when it came out is because a friend of mine (who I trusted musically) told me it was a great album and the fact that I was and am fanatical about the Dirt album (It makes my top 20 list of all time best albums) had an influence on me buying it even though No Excuses made my skin crawl. rIt kind of sucks that they weren't able to get more stuff out during their prime (Layne struggling with addiction and all). rYou can tell they ran out of time and scrapped together the back side (the last 3 songs), in order to get the album out. Whale & Wasp and Don't Follow turned out decent. I realize some peeps think Don't follow falls into the good category, but don't kid yourself, it's extremely simple and the last part of it's kind of painful. rOne of the only bands, who I really liked that I never got to see live, because they barely toured. rAnyone out there who hasn't heard this album (I assume 99% will be torrenting it), so basically song 7, possibly 5 (although I kind of think it's soothing) save yourself a little time and listen to a few classic songs.

Mixing acoustic and electric in an EP recorded in just a couple of days, Alice in Chains were in fact just messing around with some ideas when creating Jar of Flies. The results are outstanding to say the least, with the three first songs forming the best part of the album. Rotten Apple and especially Nutshell perfect that beautiful depression AiC had since some time had copyright on, and I Stay Away is the album's most powerful piece, featuring one of Staley's best vocal performances in his career. You can't really go wrong with Jar of Flies. It is not as consistently heavy as Dirt, but neither is it as light as the band's first EP Sap, instead making for a perfect blend between the two.

A truly heavy record emotionally. I find AiC 90s really hard to listen to, especially knowing Stayley?s fate. It is all just so dark and strongly emotional. Regardless this album is great in that it portrays that extremely well, and is probably their toughest for me to listen through. Don?t Follow is my only stinker here.

Jar of Flies is definitely in the running for best EP's of all time. It contains one of their bleakest and most beautiful songs with the speaker crushing Nutshell, and features the band playing a mostly acoustic sound, but with much greater results than Sap. It still finds a way to be loud, despite lacking the heaviness of Dirt. The first three tracks are classic, but the last 4 loose a bit of steam (I was never crazy about No Excuses, but I don't hate it), with an instrumental and an experimental, jazz-infused track closing it out. It's still just about as good as an EP can be.

Without question, one of the greatest music releases ever. A big call, perhaps? Well maybe, but the way this album resonates with me is profound. It had a massive impact on a very weird period of my life. The predominantly acoustic instrumentation only enhances the impact this album has had or could have on someone who has never heard it, but Layne's vocals and lyrics are what make this recording most memorable. Every track is glorious, but it's "Nutshell", clocking in at 4:19, that is this release's crown jewel. An absolute must have.

Jar of Flies ultimately displays Alice in Chains at a different angle, like a journey
into the unknown if you will. The musicianship here is considerably more delicate in terms
of accessibility, and Staley's bundle of emotional pain and struggles both seem to cocoon
and truly unravel; after hearing this, it's pretty clear that Staley had a lot on his mind
during the time, and was suffocated with layers of sorrow and turmoil. Fantastic,
breathtaking little EP right here, definitely something that could be listened to if you're
experiencing some sort of emotional trauma (or have experienced, for that matter).

The band decided to settle down for a while and experiment a little more with their sound. This EP is lighter than Dirt in terms of feeling, but the sunlight just barely creeps through. The first two tracks, "Rotten Apple", with it's buzzing metal guitar riffs soaring along with Layne Staley's hopeless crooning vocals, and "Nutshell", an acoustic ballad that doesn't get more nihilistic with lines like, "my privacy is raped". The experimentation in "I Stay Away", with it's violin coming in right after the chorus, and "Swing On This", with some heavily-blues influenced writing, seems a bit silly and forced at first, but a few more listens gets you more comfortable. This is one for the shelf for sure.

My favourite Alice in Chains record, this EP made a pretty big impact on the bands overall direction, and really shows that they're capable of stepping outside their sound to explore new realms. Acoustic music really works for this band, and this seemed like Alice at her most productive.

Even with a style distinctly contrasting with all their previous works, Jar of Flies still flows with the essence of Alice in Chains. All the while, you can listen to the album and know that this is everything that Alice in Chains has always been, but now they actually put themselves in a position to show this side of themselves. With each casually haunting track, the album unveils itself as the bands apex of creativity and eclecticism, with styles ranging from traditonal sounding Alice in Chains, but with a more relaxed and somber tone, to upbeat bursts of melancholic energy, to folkie ballads. Each track is unique in its own right, and yet at the same time, each flows perfectly with the other, conveying the sense that this album could not function if each track was not placed in exactly the place it was, and performed in exactly the way it is. This is Alice in Chains at their finest.
