This album does several things very well. It blends several metal genres (thrash metal, black metal, and doom metal) together very well without sounding thrown together. Also, it can be soft in certain sections without being too boring and without taking too much away from heavier songs like Progeny and Ground and Ain Elohim. The songs are varied enough to be interesting. It's obvious yet unique in a weird way (perhaps like it was what many thought of doing but couldn't figure out how to go about it). The part of the album that really is a treat is Triptych. While the intro (Totengott) and the outro (Winter) are somewhat ambient, Synagoga Satanae is certainly among the highlights of this album. It is mostly a brooding doom piece, but at the 7:20 mark, it becomes very haunting with the lyrics "Rise, Synagoga Satanae, Lies, Lucifuge Rofocale" being screamed over and over. Overall, a well constructed album with something for a variety of metal fans. Among the songs I'd highly recommend are Progeny, Ground, Obscured, and Triptych.

If you are waiting for To Mega Therion Part 2, that certainly won't happen on Monotheist. The album is far more akin to the doomy atmosphere of Hellhammer than "old" Celtic Frost, and doing an excellent job at that. Monotheist is more polished and less sloppy for sure, but not an inch less doomy or heavy. If you're new to Celtic Frost, honestly this isn't the best starting point unless you are familiar with doom metal and other less straightforward stuff. But if you are ready to hear some very dark yet aesthetic doom metal with hints of thrash, black and whatever, do it and give Monotheist a listen.

Incredible work, Celtic Frost's most amibtious work. The overall twisted, dark, and liturgical atmosphere in unmatched, and putting a genre tag is technically impossible to describe what is this. But one thing is for sure: this is heavy, and not an easy listen.

Celtic Frost's goodbye is one of the darkest albums ever. Monolithic, personal and hopeless. The atmospheric sections are beautiful and drenched in sadness. And the heaviness is simply devastating. A colossal work of art.

Great mix of thrash and black metal with a bit of gothic rock. Vocals are delivered in three different styles and every one of them is astounding. Riffing is heavy as it should be and chilling screams can really scare the shit out of you. Still among all this brutality there is a lot of space for slower tracks with mysterious feel to them. I'd risk saying that this is the best Celtic Frost album, and defintely the most diverse one.

Celtic Frost just keeps changing styles every album or so. While I don't happen to be a fan, this one had some good moments. The lyrics in particular are quite good, particularly on the Tryptych songs. The music was hit or miss some of the time, but the final song was very beautiful. In all, a decent album.
