Arty, stand-off cool meets pop smarts. It a formula that so much of the best British pop - Roxy Music, David Bowie, Buzzcocks, XTC, even Pet Shop Boys - thrives on. And in their own way, Franz Ferdinand were merely doing the same as Oasis had ten years earlier, they were just going off the beaten path. But just like Definitely Maybe, Franz Ferdinand was somehow both new and old - everything here was instantly familiar to anyone with a grasp on pop history, but it sounded fresh because it treated those sources with serious admiration and respect, as if they were still cutting-edge. So no wonder this was huge in England. "Take Me Out" is likely to go down as the defining anthem of the post-punk revival, perhaps even of the decade as a whole, and 8 of the 11 tracks were good enough to be considered potential singles. The fact that it's so cool actually counts against it - Franz are held back from greatness by their inability to emotionally commit to a song - but you'd certainly have reason to argue that this deserves a notable place in history.

Jam-packed with fidgety angular guitar hooks, catchy sing-along choruses, witty satirical lyrics and harmonic vocal melodies, this is an exciting and vibrant debut album that consistently excels and contains no filler. Furthermore, through the band's charisma, it has that certain X-factor which one cannot help being wowed by. A deserving winner of the 2004 Mercury Music Prize and thoroughly recommended for listeners of all kinds of musical styles. Recommended Tracks: Take Me Out, Darts of Pleasure, Michael, The Dark of the Matinee & This Fire.

Simple post-punk revival, almost all the songs could make an easy setlist to play in a pub or bar, especially "Darts Of Pleasure", "This Fire", "Take Me Out", and "The Dark Of The Matineé". Easily one of my favourite albums from the 2000s.

most of these songs have been out for a while and this album is a perfect example of what bands can produce after a few years of good songwriting. the album as a whole is always a pleasure to listen to. everytime i listen i realized how special and how unique franz ferdinand is. everyone loves a dose of brit pop now and then. i really have no problems with this album. every song is original and each song sounds different. the only reason this album isn't superb is that not every song is in your face "AWESOME!". i'm not saying that is what i'm looking for but i give credit to franz for making the album a real careful listen. after plently of review i realize that appeal of songs fluctuate up and down over time.
