Well before both new albums if you asked me to rank Cave and Ocean in terms of snooziness of their most recent material I'd have said Cave was well above our Frank. Cave's whole recent approach has been quite restrained and he's got it down well now, it suits him, it plays to his current strengths. This is a bit of a shock, it seems transitional, at times under developed, and for me it doesn't play to the strengths he showed on CO.

On CO my boy had charisma, this displays all the charisma of a limp lettuce leaf

I don't see how this is underdeveloped though. Like even the most basic instrumentals here are incredibly intricate and layered. I think the goal of this record was to be more subdued and cohesive. CO has the lyrics and the hooks, but Frank's voice reaches god tier levels here

He didn't butter me up this time, feels more like listening to a tearful friend of a friend, I don't even feel close enough to this to give him a cuddle

If you can genuinely listen to Pyramids and then listen to this album and not think somethings gone amiss fair play, for me it's clear as day

I think the distance is intentional though. CO was definitely more intimate, but I think with this one, it's like frank is distancing himself from the intimacy to show how isolated he feels in the environment he's in. It's like he's talking to us from inside a glass box

pyramids is like song of the decade but the style of music between that and this are hardly comparable

like yeah pyramids isnt on this but as a complete total album this is more cohesive

I'm afraid I have a preconceived negative bias towards it but I'm gonna give it a spin eventually.

Pyramids is a jam and a half, some other great jams on CO as well, but the whole neo R&B/soul stuff is hit or miss for me and I feel like that's what this is?

This is definitely more pop than rnb or soul

Then it'll still be hit or miss likely, but here's to hoping the hits hit.

That's what I thought from what I've read.
