Any 2016 albums like this, as it happens?

This one is definitely a grower. Admittedly it has some songs I don't like a whole ton but the best ones here are among their best work.

As for a 2016 album like this, I can't think of anything off the top of my head that mixes Americana with indie pop quite like this does.

Closest I can think of is Drive-by Truckers but it's kinda different

Yeah for the most part DBTs is nothing like this really.

The only other one I can think of is Case/Lang/Veirs but that isn't really all that similar either.

Andrew Bird's Are You Serious might share some interesting indie-folk/pop elements with this, although it's completely different in tone, and definitely not among his strongest albums.

Lake Song is one my favorite tunes from them, but this is definitely their only record that never did anything for me.

this aged weirdly, it's definitely a few tracks too long but the run of Make You Better, Lake Song and Till the Water's All Long Gone is fantastic

Colin said on Twitter a few months ago they were starting work on album number 8, hopefully we’ll get a release this year, can’t believe this one came out 3 years ago already.

yeah I'm ready for a new one

this one is solid minus a track or two

I'd like to see them get out of the box a bit after the last two innocuous releases

The new single definitely sounds more like Crane's Wife than Picaresque.

Such a beaut of an album. Agreed it aged weirdly, in the sense that it's now 4 years old and I still think it's bloody gorgeous.

The way Colin sings 'I am hopeful, should I be hopeful' on the closer just melts me man

Melted by that and wholly dissolved by Lake Song.

Yup this album just melts me, listened to "Make You Better" the other day for the first time in a good while and it sounds as great as ever. The latest album was a major disappointment but I still hold that everything they made up to and including this is excellent.

Too little, too late

Everybody gotta medicate

Through the winter when the winter comes down

And all the city comes to hanging ground
