Yeah, politics aside, Mikko’s voice fits the group better. But I support their choice to ease him out of the forefront given all the noise. The guitars for a lot of it are just not as awe-inspiring as I’ve come to expect. Not a single innovative lead passage, and the new solos definitely don’t make up for that even though they’re kinda neat at times. The solos could have just been better too, though DSO never struck me as a guitar solo band in the first place. Used to them playing with song structure much more as well. Just being a more dynamic band overall. Am I the only one that thinks the kinda staccato leads toward the end of the closer are a bit cheesy? I guess the pure melodicism of that tune is a different vibe than I’m used to for them, it was almost post punk in a way. Still a great record though, honestly. Just weirdly underwhelming for them, as others have said. Cool lyrics too, I fuck with the anti-human, pro-nature sentiments. Teetering between a 3.5 and a 4 on the first listen. Probably the least good album since before the Trilogy, but still better than their straight ahead bm stuff.

I can't believe this band managed to make me disappointed with an album but they did... New one is their worst posibly. I may end up rating it lower than their debut, and this is coming from someone who has 5d most of DsO's discography. It's been my fav band for many years but truth be told, new album is bland

Pretty stunned at how poor their new album is. It’s bordering on amateurish/comical at times (the leads and ‘solos’ especially). It’s like they took the blandest moments from TFOP and decided to make a whole album of it, with borderline timekeeping in some sections (e.g. last track). A lot of those melodies sound like they came from the cutting room floor of an MGLA session, too. Also, the ‘fable’ that they’ve written is an absolute cringe fest. Talk about delusions of grandeur. At least in the past they had the music to back it up. Now that it’s laid bare to stand on its own, it reads like some pity party about ‘cancel culture’:

“They bark at all which they do not know. They bark at the sun, the moon, and the wind rustling through the leaves. They bark with a grin that reveals crooked teeth and greying gums. They bark whenever they hear barking, increasingly intoxicated by the sounds of their own barking. Their odorous, scab-plagued mass-stare fixes on you, as they all bark in unison: ‘The many are good and the few are bad – look only to us and bow to our creed, for we rule as kings on this earth. And our baskets are in towers so high that even the mountains pale with envy! Our leashes are plated with silver and our necklaces made of gold.”

this style of grooveless, homogeneous dissonant wank metal has always been my least favorite iteration of the genre, and these guys are the worst offenders.

doesnt help that theyre pieces of shit either.
