Ayyy Hester got in! Thank the lord, a huge win for Special Teams as a whole.

Also Connecticut legend Dwight Freeney in is nice!

One of the few sports analysts I like is crying ab it lol. Something about how someone who didn’t play every down doesn’t deserve to be hall worthy. Obviously a goofy take, considering Hester is hands down the greatest returner of all time; that alone makes him worth it to me.

Love Dwight, he came to the Falcons at the end of his career and still made an impact. All-timer for sure.

my fave hester memory is weirdly the seahawks/falcons 2016 divisional round game when hester played for the seahawks. think it was his last game ever

the seahawks got smokedddd but hester had two awesome returns in the first half which (had they not been called back on dumb penalties) would've really kept seattle in the game. he was absolutely awful in baltimore earlier that season, so it was really nice to see him get a redemption arc being the only seahawk to show up that day

Hester wasn't a good every-down player, but whatever

hester is far and away the greatest kick/punt returner who ever played and tbh is one of the most iconic players of last 20 years. he has by far the most combined kick/punt return TDs ever, i think over double 2nd place even (and who knows how much more he could've gotten if the majority of the league wasn't terrified of kicking to him). made both the 2000s and 2010s all decade teams.

his super bowl opening kickoff return touchdown in the rain with all the cameras flashing is one of the greatest plays in nfl history. the whole lead up to that game people were asking "will the colts dare kick it to hester?" and then they did on the first play and got what was coming to them

i understand the "didn't play every down" critique but hester's effect on games comfortably transcends that imo

not to mention with the nfl inching closer and closer to removing kickoffs from the game entirely / offenses going for it on 4th down more than ever these days, we will 100% guaranteed never see a player like him ever again.

If ST was such a black sheep then why does it even exist lmao players should be rewarded for excelling at their positions and making an impact and Hester certainly did so. Meanwhile over the next 10 years you’ll see some mediocre ass “every-down” players get in because of how inflated stats are these days. Like wtf are people smoking saying that Matt Ryan is a HOF caliber QB but Hester (the greatest player in his best role) isn’t worthy?

Yeah there are a lot of people falling in love with some QBs based on volume stats and the like. Ryan's big thing is his MVP season, but that's really all he has in terms of accolades, and an MVP in of itself isn't enough to make the Hall. The standard is meant to be high.

On a somewhat related note, I am not ready for the rapidly-approaching Eli Manning HoF conversations...

imo the only qbs from the last 20 years who should be in the hof is brady, peyton, brees and rodgers. mahomes can retire monday win or lose and be first ballot too.

everyone else though??? like they were all great players but i don't think big ben or matt ryan or stafford or rivers deserve to be in the hall of fame just because they were top 10 qbs for a decade+. every other position you have to be the best of the best, but qb? nah. big ben is borderline i guess... but i think his off the field shenanigans make me lean no.

that being said, if eli were to ever make the hall in a particularly weak year i would understand. if he beat out someone far more deserving (like antonio gates this year lol) i'd be pretty pissed tho.

Eli is tough because he was rarely THAT good (even downright bad at many points in his career), but he came alive twice to create two of the most iconic playoff runs in league history, including perhaps the greatest upset on the biggest stage. He showed up when it mattered most and has the hardware to prove it, it's just a matter of whether those two runs carry enough prestige to warrant inclusion into the Hall.

And if Eli gets in, it'd be hard to keep a QB like Ben out, who has the same amount of rings while being the better player overall. As much as his off-the-field issues impact his perception (as they rightfully should), I have a feeling the media would look past it.

yeah i just feel like ben while great was clearly a step below brady/peyton/brees/rodgers... and while eli is obv isn't on their level either, he'd be getting in more-so on his legend than his down-to-down play. think it also helps that eli is a standup guy, walter payton man of the year, beloved media personality etc. while big ben is... not.

the fact that espn dedicated an entire monday night football broadcast to "big ben's pittsburgh send off" tells me he'll probably get voted in though.

I’m in the Eli gets in camp. Dude was reliable as hell and never missed a start besides one game where the coach benched him for reasons beyond anyone’s knowing. Guy also won two Super Bowls against the Pats dynasty that seemed completely unbeatable on the big stage as a result of plays he made. He has also become a massive figurehead for the league and a positive force overall.

I definitely see both sides of the argument, but Eli is such a unique case and he is, of course, a Manning.
