Alligator is easily my least favorite of the masterpiece days.
[Sleep Well Beast]? TWFM > High Violet > Boxer > Alligator. Pretty easy for me. They’ve worked their way into all time favorites for me tho. Can’t go wrong with any of their work, but Trouble Will Find Me is so underrated and one of my all time favorite albums.

@Toad - tindersticks, silver Jews and beat happening make the holy trinity of where The National got a lot of their cues from.. a lot of properly amazing stuff there

SWB I would tentatively put 2nd behind Boxer and ahead of this, but gotta wait for the HQ to be sure. Can't stop listening to it tho

SWB is incredible, and whether you enjoy the more atmospheric, slower National or rock n' roll National will depend on how it will rank for you with their others. There's no question that it holds up to the previous four though.

"whether you enjoy the more atmospheric, slower National or rock n' roll National will depend on how it will rank for you with their others."
The singles have been pretty much a balance between the two, no? Is the record itself weighted particularly in favour of one, rather than the other?
|
| |
Imo it's the more slow, atmospheric side
