I love how they went melodic with this album but kept much of their grind sound. Songs are still heavy as hell, and Jeff's voice is amazing in a sick way. Michael Amott also has such a distinct style on guitar that I can always tell when it's him soloing instead of Steer.

Is this really Death Metal? Or is it more like Melodic Death, At The Gates style? I don't need another At The Gates, but I'd love to hear Michael Amott do some death metal pickin'.[/QUOTE]
It is melodic death, but it's not the same style as At The Gates. It's just death metal with melody, rather than the clipped, thrash-infused style that ATG and friends play.

I sense a really really overrated album here...it's like Arch Enemy, completely.

Old Arch Enemy isn't overrated. And have you even listened to it yet?

I've only had this for 3 days or so, but so far.. I'd have to agree with mazz. It's melodic death done very well, but something about the simplistic nature of the music (besides the guitar playing) bothers me a bit. It's great and all, but so far I'd say its far from perfect.

you guys must be deaf.

The drums would be the only lacking bit. And the bass lags. But the overall album is a classic.

I didn't mean that the instruments lack, although the drums do. I mean the music itself. The songwriting is pretty linear, the harmonies have been done to death (although I realize that's because this album pioneered them), and it lacks diversity overall. Again, I've only had it for a very short time, so it'll probably grow on me.
I must be deaf, that's it.

I knew he was deaf :smoke:

Indeedy I have listened to it...it's melodic death, and IMO, melodic death is melodic death. I hope this grows on me, though.

The main reason this sounds generic at all (it doesn't to me anyway) is because so many bands tried to rape this style after them. Thus, they're the bands who play generic stuff, wereas these guys deserve all the credit they get for the writing.

Good point...*ponders*
This is worthy of a four.

Generic? Overdone? Simplistic? Are you kidding me?
This album began the wave of melodic metal we hear. This album was the first of its kind (94) and I will argue that today it still stands as the best of its kind. Yeah keep listening. This Message Edited On 11.09.05

I have a question for all you Carcass fans. In your opinions, what is the best written and best produced Carcass album. Ive been meaning to get into these guys for a while because I read an interview with the Arch Enemy guitarist and they talked about this old band being Carcass. Your thoughts and opinions are appreciated. I will check back in a day or so and see what you guys have written. Thanks!

All albums before this were grind, which means more than half of their discography was grind. The site doesn't allow indivual albums to be classified.

"A select few bands release an album which starts, epitomises or defines an entire genre or style of music. But how many bands can claim to have done so more than once?"
I completely agree with this, it's amazing what they accomplished as a band during their career. This album is a must have, and a definate favourite in my collection. Heh, Carcass make me proud to be English!
