"The Infanta and most of the other songs are good but I happen to think that The Bagmans Gambit is almost the best song."

I agree 100%, except i think it's THE best song

Amazing reveiw. All of I've heard of these guys is 16 Milatary Wives, which was great. Should I start out with this record, or the first.

Well I guess it depends whether you liked those songs or not. I would definitely recommend them, but if you didn't like the songs you heard then it seems a fitting conclusion that the albums won't be for you. This Message Edited On 03.26.06

Zebra, Eli's a weak point for you?
After We All Go Down Together it's my favourite track.
They are all good tough. Really are. Whereas, Castaways's last 2 tracks are unlistenable.
Fantastic review Med.

Bagman's Gambit is my least favourite on there; not bad though.
But by your name, IsItLuck?, I must respect your decision.

I just heard "The Mariners Revenge" for the first time, and it's pretty sweet! It's got a crazy story.

I love these guys, I was supposed to see them in concert a while back but missed the show :p. Nice review.

Yes it is, it's such a fun story to listen too. Meloy is a lyrical genius. I have a live show of him that they released. It's quite entertaining, he messes up to a song, I think it's 'Bachelor and the Bride', and has to have the crowd sing with him because he hadn't sung it in a while....

Meloy is incredibly talented. If you havn't heard his live at Beachcombers, I suggest you do. They put it up for free download a while ago, but I don't remember where and when. Either way, it's him and his acoustic, good stuff. This album is probably my favorite of the Decemberists. Beautiful.

On The Bus Mall is incomprehensibly brilliant. It's hands down the best song here, and likely the best song they've ever recorded.

Great album although the new one is better. Brilliant review, Med is the best reviewer on the site hands down imo.

This album almost sucks in comparison to Crane Wife.

I love The Mariner's Revenge Song. Does anyone know if they play it in concert?

I know they have played it before in concert (pre-crane wife), but the last time I saw them, it was not on the setlist.
