Also saying "...than I ever expected from her" makes it seem like you have an inflated view of yourself and makes you come across as an arrogant douche. "...than one would expect." is good I think. So, assuming what someone else would expect is a less arrogant and self-important way of saying that? I should assume what others may expect over what I, myself, do expect? How does that make any sense at all? I've read far worse reviews (see: my own from a few years ago), but I think you could have focussed more on the album and less upon the circumstances under which it was written, because your description of the music itself is rather good for want of a better phrase. I think the circumstances have a lot to do with the album and also have a lot to do with proving this isn't just more insincere pop music where the lyrics are made up works of fiction by some third party.

subtly conveying that your opinion is a common one ('than one would expect') is a whole lot more innocent than stating implicitly that they're your expectations
also
It is a smooth, warm song that seems to be speaking to her father directly. It is lead by a mellow electronic beat and subtle string arrangements until its finale. It culminates with the words,
seriously man, try joining some of those sentences together, starting three sentences in a row with the same word is bad form

So I don't remember ever talking to you before and so I don't remember when we were supposed to start disliking each other, but thanks for the tips anyway.

Yeah, I can't think of a time I saw him posting like a douche and wouldn't have even thought anything of it until he posted that other thing later.
If you enjoyed the previous ones, I can't believe you wouldn't like this one even more.

I love the mellowness of this album, and the lyrical content is ironically natural.

Dido's easily better than 90% of mainstream pop around today. Good enough review, I didn't like the fact that you constantly mentioned Dido's father dying, but apart from that it was pretty good.

I agree that her music is better than 90% of what's out there. I like the fact that she's actually a creative force in the music.
As for mentioning her dad so much in the review, you're right but it wasn't originally like that. There was about one and half more paragraphs that had nothing to do with him and that would have made his part a whole lot less in the review... but I edited down significantly and now he makes up a majority which I didn't notice until people pointed it out. This Message Edited On 11.17.08

I'm new here....but it seems that most are reviewing the review and the reviewer, and not the music. Is that the point of the comments here?
I am thoroughly enjoying Dido's new music - whether you know some of it is written to her father or not, it is very affecting. But if you're not a fan of mellow music, then its not for you. Great for chilling out on a winter night.

It's not the sole point, but it is encouraged to help everyone become better writers. You can also give your opinion on the music in the comments as well, though.

I have to say, I was excited to hear Dido released a new album. I loved her first 2 albums back when I was going through High School.
But, to be honest, only 3 tracks on the album are memorable, which are tracks "Don't Believe In Love", "Quiet Times", and "Grafton Street". The other tracks just don't seem to have a real solid melody, and the vibe is too "sleepy" for its own good. These songs seem to be the kind of songs that a songwriter would keep to themselves, because:
A) They were written during a tough period in their life, and the lyrics represent such a time.
B) They don't want to poison the raw emotion of the song by making it a pop song, or "overproducing" them.
This isn't the comeback album that could have propelled Dido back into the spotlight. This is an album that is full of emotion, yet void of hooks or memorability. As I said before, there are 3 tracks that are great pop tunes.
I suppose those 3 tracks will have to satisfy fans like me that enjoy Dido when she's putting her great pop voice to use. Oh, and listen out for the outro to "Grafton Street". It's quite amazing, but I suppose we should thank Jon Brion for that one! This Message Edited On 11.26.08This Message Edited On 11.27.08

I agree with cookielibby saying we should more discuss the music, rather than the reviewer. However, I would like to add one more thing.
Personally, I really enjoyed reading this review. I have listened to this album for only two days now and I could hear the subtelty and quality of the music. However, if I read the circumstances under which music has been written, I can sometimes better identify myself with the music and experience it at a different level. Just like with this album and this review.
Additionally, If I hadn't previously listened to the album, I would definitely listen to it after reading, and I would say it fits the atmosphere which is described in the review. So I would say: Great review! Thanks a lot!
Back to the music. Although I am more a fan of heavier music, I like this a lot, especially during this cold and wet winters, with candlelight and a warm atmosphere.

At first, I didn't like this album, but upon further listens, the album really grew on me and I began to love it. This is her best work in her catalogue.

Yeah. Her first album was pretty instant, but this one takes longer to get into. I think that will give it more staying power as time goes on though.

Really? You haven't heard this even though you like Life for Rent? This is much better than that album... although I still like the debut the most.
