i'd definitely say that this is the kind of sigur ros album you should listen after you've already been introduced to the band via takk... or some more "accessible" post-rock. excellently written

Excellent review! I'm happy that you did it and I wasn't expecting you to write this so quickly. I also see you're having the same problem I had with the album not being categorized properly, lol.
It's a very rare thing that I can listen to Sigur Ros to be happy, unless I'm listening to their newest, more happy feeling album. For the most part I like to put their music on and paint. I agree with your three favorite songs, and that Untitled 5 is the least enjoyable song on this, but I still like them all a lot more.
Also, the booklet is meant for the listener to interpret the music as they choose and write imaginary lyrics as to what they think the actual lyrics are. Although, I've never done this, lol. Again, great review, good to see a different perspective.

To me, if the album were any more complex, it would detract from the overall emotion and mood -- which is the whole point of the album anyway. I would be listening for the intricacies of the music, instead of just being able to sit back and let it swell over me.
In other words, i'm not really arguing against the review...the album is minimalistic and somewhat redundant, no doubt. My point is that if the music was any more complex or intricate, the pure and simple emotional impact would not be so apparent.

it's definitely a mood piece, an album that must be listened to in it's entirety whereas with other Sigur Ros albums there may be fine songs and such but never the consistency and definite atmopshere here
I agree entirely with this. The entire albums works best as a whole and every other Sigur Ros album acts more like a collection of songs.

I didn't say it had to be more complex, it could have variation and not be overly complex or distracting. Agaetis Byrjun has variation, isn't complex and is a much better album.

Yes, minimalism can make some pieces amazing, an example would be, Frank Ticheli's Sanctuary, using the same melody over and over until building till a climax, even be it a symphonic piece it is one of my favourite pieces of music.

I think you may have missed my point. It's the lack of variation, the redundant droning that sucks any emotion out of this album for me. Minus those few tracks that I mentioned which are fantastic.
And yes minimalism is tight. Though I prefer early minimalism to modern stuff in terms of classical (ie. Debussy)
