"The party's today right?" Oh well, better late than never. LOL.
Great review DavID. A bit over the top imo, but if you like it that much, then why not.
Really liked your summation of 'Byrds of Prey'. It's funny how all the songs with animals in their titles are realy good. Add 'Heart' & 'Thump' and you have the making of a very good album.
The 2nd half isn't as strong as the first & the album may have been better if she had abandoned her past, but there's still nothing too bad included here.
I need to give it a few more listens, but it's probably a strong 3.5 for me & will be in my top 20 come years end.

I wouldn't call the slower songs boring either, but I do prefer the more fun 1st half of the album.
Just something out of nowhere & mainly irrelevant; I've seen this album with 3 different album covers. Did her father go all arty on her or something?

Bertie's actually an artist in her own right. She's gonna have an exhibition in Melbourne, CK, you should go along!

Yeah, I was reading about that yesterday. Mate, me & art don't go together at all. I wouldn't know where to look. In the same article, it was saying how she also designed t-shirts to be packaged with the album.
Likely to be one of 2009's most overlooked gems, Bertie Blackman finally finds her best sound on 'Secrets and Lies'. With its 1st half being near flawless, Blackman impressively & originally combines glitchy electronica with organic instrumentation, alluring atmospherics with catchy choruses, and eccentric quirkiness with melodic accessibility. Look no further than the tribal-like rhythms & layered handclaps of lead single 'Heart' for proof. The more conventional 2nd half and 1-2 tracks too many slow the momentum, but in no way derail this excellent album. Recommended Tracks: Heart, Byrds of Prey, White Owl & Black Cats.
