You could actually HEAR the bass in this release. Then Adam D started mixing out every damn frequency that wasn't guitar or vocal. And the songwriting is top notch. It feels honest, and even when it fumbles, it's still charming. Fast forward to As Daylight Dies and beyond, and everything seems so contrived. Too professional.
Meh. Still love this album. It DEFINED metal for me as a young teenager. I can remember professing my love for it above ADD and EoH and having all my friends look at me in shock. "Jesse barely sang!" "It's too heavy!" "I can't understand the lyrics!"

Why do I have this as a 4? It should be a 4.5. I still have too much nostalgic love for it.
Fix'd.

Although things went downhill after Howard joined, it isn't totally Howard that worsened their sound
I attribute it more to Adam D who started being lead guitarist and just smothering Killswitch with cheese

Adam D was a much better drummer than guitarist. The groove he has on AOJB kicks any KsE drumming post this' butt.

It's pretty good.

yeah plus Adam just stripped any serious tone out of Howard's lyrics by prancing around in a cape during live shows

Jesse's lyrics >>>>>>> Howard's. Writing the same three songs (Love song, loss of love song, "Time-to-stand-up-and-be-strong-metuhlz" song) kind of strips away any serious tone as well.

I can't stand to hear their current vocalist sing his re-recording of Fixation on the Darkness, let alone the rest of this album, man.
And yeah, when this came out, it was revolutionary, man.
