Imitation, I'll Take the Rain and Reno are great songs but there's not much else here imo.

For me this album is the closest and unique approach ever made by this band into the REM feeling understood as the dream's phase.

'Beat a Drum' is my favourite here and even then I can imagine the song could have been improved with a couple of tweaks to the arrangement/instrumental choices

This was such a disappointment when it came out. I had just gotten into R.E.M. a year before it dropped, and I was in love with Up, so I assumed it would be the perfect follow up. Nup. Squandered them so much for me that I kind of dropped out until Accelerate.

I was listening to all the way to Reno and the song made me feel so old despite the fact I'm only 27

One of the first CDs I got. As a kid, I liked this band.
Revisited this record recently, didn't like it at all.

MTV played the SHIT out of Imitation of Life
This record will always remind of that time in the early 2000s

In retrospect this is the bands best of the post Berry albums imo. Its in my regular rotation now. A high 3.5 from me these days. More like a 3.7 tbh

"In April 2021, almost exactly twenty years after the album's release, Michael Stipe stated that Reveal had possibly overtaken New Adventures in Hi-Fi in being his favorite R.E.M. album."

Interesting, this is such an inconsistent record with 80% of the songs being very low-energy compared to 'Imitation of Life' - I would rate this a 2.5 without the titular single.

I absolutely loved this when it came out. I haven’t given it a proper listen in years/decades. The band had definitely lost their way a bit.

i think this, up, and accelerate are really good, collapse is cool and a respectable close but id mostly just rather jam all the other albums they're pulling from, and around the sun is one of the worst albums by any band i like

Yeah I completely agree mate although Leaving New York is a beauty of a song.
I haven’t given Collapse into Now a proper listen.
Green upto Monster are my R.E.M, the ones I grew up with and were excited by. The Decca years are the band at their most vibrant.

This album sounds like it was made by people who gave up
Up had its issues, but it at least sounded like it had ideas they were trying out
This album is like a cold dead fish
