Massively underrated. Two slightly boring songs, but the rest omg.

Not really. This album is still good, but not really up to par with their earlier albums.

Well, it really clicks for me. It's not as revolutionary as Masquerade (which also had one or two mediocre songs, btw), or as atmospheric as Aspera, but I'm a sucker for their genius anyway.

I just think that both of those albums completely rape this one. This is still good for a spin every once in a while though.

And the worst part is, I don't even miss Garm on it.

yeah this is awful

Album Rating: 3.5
See I don't think it's awful. It's just really average for an Arcturus album.

This was the first Arcturus album I heard / and is also my fucking favorite!

"woah Spag, Sham Mirrors is wwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy beyond better than this.
But I'm still liking this one, definitely more musically coherent that La Masquerade"
Well i do love Sham Mirrors (a masterpiece) too but this album just got me more. The production is the only serious flaw on here imo but that doesn't ruin it for me at all. I think it just gets too much hate and it's mainly because of that. The dark atmosphere, + Hellhammer and vocals sold this one to me. Plus this album i got me into half of the stuff i listen to now so i owe it to that. It would be awesome if they eventually remastered this but I don't think that will ever happen.
Also i can agree on LMI being the worst Arcturus, but I still like it a lot. Won't ever give it more than a 4 though.

La Masquerade Infernale is way better than this.

I respect the legacy of LMI, but this one has won my heart and mind.

I don't understand the average for this or the gripes I hear about it. The production doesn't bother me at all, though I might be listening to a newer, remastered version on Spotify. The new vocalist is a fine replacement for Garm, and has plenty of eccentric personality of his own to fit the band. I love the very spacey and atmospheric vibes the music has, a great evolution from The Sham Mirrors, which will always be their best.

^The average gripes are wrong :] Nor does production both me neither. It's not like Arcturus are accustomed to perfect production. Not to mention, they're at least somewhat fucking black metal.
And this has the absolute best atmosphere.

The atmosphere is indeed amazing, and some might not like how clear the production and mixing sounds, but I dig that in certain albums like this. This isn't supposed to be Nattens Madrigal. The only gripe I might have is that the vocals might be a little too loud. I agree with what the review says about how guitar-driven it is, some of the band's best solos, riffs, and melodies they've recorded on here.

This isn't horrible or anything, it just pales in comparison to everything else they've done hard. And you're off your rocker if you think this has a better atmosphere than any of the albums that came before it.
