it's alright, not their best right

a lot of people complaining that the last album was just alright and this is similar; i completely disagree. their last album is just pure unadulterated deerhunter being deerhunter. it was stuffed with fun, energetic tunes and it was a blast. this one is excellent too, if maybe a little less enjoyable, for me. i especially love leather and wood, which is easily one of their most haunting songs

i think this album is a more refined go at what Monomania explored; you're lulled into a false sense of security by way of angular pop bliss and woozy guitar chimes, only to have the carpet pulled from under you in the latter half as melodies and harmonies (so pretty) start disintegrating. a triumph.

that's ardent praise for a 4/5 ;D

i wouldn't liken it to monomania because that one was rough around the edges, sort of sloppy sounding despite being technical and beautiful all the same.

Ok I've just come back from their gig and fuck that was an immense show - they were in an old church and you could hear all the reverb bouncing off the walls and echoing and it just felt like the music was all around you and whole show was 10/10 experience and they played Helicopter as their closer so yeah 10/10

Monomania I thought was bad. Hope this is not like that.
