Ahaha yeah, they were super cool dudes! I had backstage passes to them and The Devin Townsend Project so I met all of those guys too, got some records and posters signed, had some nice convos
That was my second time meeting Devin, though - one of the nicest musicians I've ever met

I've met Devin twice as well... amazing guy for sure. I met him and William Duvall from Alice in Chains together on one occasion, during the NAMM Show in California

A bunch of my favorite albums took me a little now that I'm thinking about it

The immediate amount of flack this album got definitely played on a lot of people's minds and stopped some people from really giving it a chance and letting the best parts of the songwriting really sink in. I love this album as it was a soundtrack to one of the best summers I ever had, and even though the production is lacking and some of the writing is overly simple and repetitive, you can tell it is a transitional album, and I think if they are able to hone this style of emotive writing (in the way they perfected it on Low Lands) I believe they could produce a masterpiece in this vein, something I don't think I could say of any of their past albums

I dunno, I mean I am all for a more progressive/melodic Gojira but imo this album didn't really have songs that really progressed to much of anything. Some of the longer songs felt like they were cut off before they REALLY went where they could have gone, and the heavier tracks were unusually repetitive for them imo
I still dig this album because Gojira is in my top 5 or 6 bands probably but this is not really an album I listen to, unless I'm on a Gojira binge and I've overplayed their other albums.

All valid points, I think I just loved the injection of clean vocals into their sound. Joe's cleans aren't even that amazing but there's something about them that's just so warm and inviting and emotive. I think for me Low lands and the endings of Shooting Star and Stranded are clear highlights of the album (along with the pray breakdown of course m/) for this very reason

"Have any of you guys had a time where you listened to an album for the first time, (and actually thoroughly listened), went "huh, this is decent", then a few months later revisited it nonchalantly, and go "holy shit, past me must've been deaf, this is incredible."
Basically my relationship with this band. I liked a couple songs but never gave them a real shot and now they're one of my fave bands.

"I mean, in terms of repetitiveness? I think L'enfant Sauvage is a lot more. But that one is even better than this one."
Disagree hard there. I was also talking about repetitiveness within the songs themselves, not just looking at the album as a whole.

Yeah. Not a metal album, but The Future and the Past by Natalie Prass was a big example for me. I reviewed it back in 2018 and only gave it a 3, but then it kept growing and growing on me and I was eventually like "damn, this is actually one of the best indie pop albums I've heard in a while"! And then I saw her live in April 2019 and that further cemented my enjoyment of her music... plus I got to meet her after the show!
These days, I'm somewhere around a 4-4.5 with that album

@DivergentThinking Rina Sawayama’s debut was like that with me. First heard it and thought nothing of it. Gave it a relisten a month later and loved it. Started as a 3 and is now a 4.5

New single is just plain bad tbh.
None of the singles have wow'd me anyway, nothing like Silvera or something on here.
