I was worried about this being just a b-side-like, watered down Apocalypse, Girl (since it's released only a year afterward), but this one sits much better with me. Electro-pop bits are way better here and The Plague is both terrifying and hilarious.
Great review, have fun with the rest of her discog. Viscera, especially, is pretty different than her newest efforts.

"Royals review summary for that album almost made it my least favourite "
Innocence may be kinky.....!!

so i just saw Jenny on wednesday. it was... interesting...
|

i can't lie and say it wasn't in some ways disappointing. i wish i could have seen her touring Viscera instead of this. that being said it was also one of the weirdest shows i've ever seen and so it had value in that alone.

it was just her and a dude with like 4000 electronics doing all the music over the PA. having an entire set coming out over a PA never sounds that amazing, so there was that. Then since it was primarily Blood Fight material there wasn't a lot of utilization of her best vocal feats ala Viscera where she really lets loose. The vast majority was her spoken word kind of whisper singing shit until the last few tracks. And she tried to make it really performance arty but it kind of seemed half baked. Like she had like a grand total of like 4 stage props so it wasn't actually that engaging. She had like a beach towel and a box and some sunglasses and an art book and some roses. Also she is really small. like really, really, really, really absurdly small.
BUT the atmosphere they created with so little was impressive. the entire audience was kind of on edge in this half-enjoyment half-bewilderment. No one got what they were expecting and everyone was mildly uncomfortable I think. It was less of a show than a hyper-feminist minimalist performance piece that pretty much hinged on Jenny Hval's mystique.
