I've never understood why this is the meme album that gets a 1/3 of his total ratings.

None if that's an option.

I would like to know how this one got hyped up even though it was just as ignored as his other albums upon release.

Maybe this is why, it could be a few reasons though.

happens often with artists, a random album by them gains steam on RYM and then once it has the most ratings, that trend will just continue

even if it's nowhere near their best work

great album tho :]

rym is very influential, but I'm not sure if that explains it.

Yeah good album, I might bump it up.

It was also listed in Fact magazines Top 100 Albums of the 1970s (2014)

maybe reissued at the right time, & it was the first in a series of Basho archival projects

it probably helps that the album cover is more fashionable than like, the vanguard albums

There had to be some critical appreciation of it at the time of its release, I doubt it was randomly picked to be the first Basho album to be rereleased

It wasn't the first to be rereleased.

@dadkungfu first in a series by this archival label, not the first Basho to ever get a rerelease. i doubt it got any recognition at the time, the windham hill label was tiny at the time, and Basho's music was later neglected when it became a major label because he didn't fit the new age brand

i checked rym and by my count less than 5% of ratings were placed before 2013, and the wiki suggests the 2013 reissue caused renewed interest in Basho's music. prior to this, i think venus in cancer was his most popular alb by far
