ok my curiousity overcame me and I gave this a spin. It's got its moments but yeah the lyrics just fall apart at the end. Like I know Bemis is 'abrasive' and all that but hoo boy

hearing Max's wife and young daughters sing on a song about murdering your gay lover for the sake of your epic cathartic narrative arc makes me feel genuinely uncomfortable in a way that's entirely new to me

oh crap I didn't realize his daughters were on this too, yikes...

it's frustrating because I really like some of the songwriting here, and from my limited exposure to Bemis, I like his ridiculously self-aware and self-depracating style (again, Hebrews was really good), but, like...

I actually think this is arguably the best Say Anything record in a decade, arguably in the top 3 records of their discography.

Rowan don't you think that your discomfort in regards to the ending is perhaps the intended reaction? Oliver is not supposed to be a likable character from start to finish as far as I'm concerned.

this leaked so long ago i forgot about it but saying it's their best in a decade is pretty accurate. it's also pretty damn decent on its own merits

I'm sure Max has been a douche since day one but if the music is good that's all I really care about

yea being honest i only found out the plot to the album a few weeks ago and i’ve jammed this very frequently since it leaked. it’s a stupid and fucked up plot, but it’s not enough to distract from the insanely good songwriting

@rowan5215

Yeah I found the narrative of the album super cringe as well. Hebrews wasn't much better imo. Max is a pretty cringe internet personality lately. Whether it be his constant shitting upon Jesse Lacey (I don't care Max, goddamn...) Or his awful dad jokes...

A 4.5 for a new Say Anything album? I'm pretty damn skeptical, but I guess I'll have to check this out as I'd kind of given up on them after their last few albums.
