he alternates between singing and screaming within single lines of lyrics quite often, so I'm surprised he ever tricked you in the first place haha

Idk, just always assumed there were two for some reason but never did my research. sometimes he records his harsh/clean vocals together so it sounds like 2 vocalists. He must have at least 3 singing styles though, more versatile than a lot of similar bands imo

lmfaoooo I'm just now seeing that the summary line for the review is the very quote I was trashing. I swear I wasn't intentionally being a dick

im fine with the line. i can appreciate that this album concluded with a positive sentiment instead of just being a totally whiny, "poor me" record (AKA Schmaltz).

Yeah for me it's getting harder to listen to really down and out bands. I ate it all up in my teens/early 20s but now it's like ehh...maybe I'll just put on some Spoon and try not think about existential dread.

I was pleasantly surprised by this. The lyrics are kinda hard to tolerate, but it was a fun record to run to.

really surprised people are so put off by lyrics that I thought were pretty strong. they're very vulnerable but it doesn't feel cheesy to me

I just think this falls flat instrumentally. The tracks don't stand out in any spectacular way and sort of blend together, which is a fault I found in their previous effort as well. Their debut had a bit more of a restraint to it and there was a tinge of math influence in both composition and atmosphere. Such elements are lacking here as far as I can tell.
Lyrically though, I've never had an issue, but that's also because my philosophy on lyrical content can kinda vary. The thought is that, essentially, we don't always think in poetic verses. Lines like the ones found here, while outwardly 'immature,' are most like our innermost thoughts: undisguised, exposed, and raw, not dressed up in metaphor/wordplay. It can fall flat, naturally, but here I think it fits the bill.

yeah but after 3 albums of near-identical lyrics...that's when I judge.

And I'd say that's fair, but I can still see the appeal

the lyrics are definitely similar to their last two (I drink beer, have social anxiety, etc.) but there's that turning point mentioned in the album's second half where he starts trying to move to a better place that makes it a bit more refreshing imo.
yo Mars, this has more math influence than the debut, lol. I agree the debut is more restrained though

Cerulean City is great, this album has been in constant rotation since it's release.

The last two tracks are amazing. I love how well the opener and closer work together as well.
