I'm kind of getting the opposite, I would say my first two listens were the best and now it's kind of settled at a 4. With that being said, I can see it growing again but can't see it getting lower
I love the sound, love the melodies, and love the instrumental flourishes, but at times it seems falsely lush. Those first two listens captivated me, but there are points where it starts to feel a little more hollow the more that I pay attention to it. I love the piano, the horns, and the accessibility, but also am with the people that miss some of the more earthly tones of HB. Curious to see how this continues to develop as I keep listening though, because I do for sure love it. Just maybe not as much as I thought I would at first listen

Maestranza and Young Man's Game are two of the most underrated songs thus far at least in terms of early discussion

Helplessness Blues is still their masterpiece but this is a strong contender for second-best

I gotta be honest, I am not blown away by the first few songs.

This is the logical successor to Helplessness Blues. The only thing I could see turning people off is its sleek outer shell (which I expounded upon in my review), which is a legitimate beef. It just happens to not bother me. In fact, as a standalone album, I adore it (I wouldn't want them to remain in this mode much longer though - it's an approach that would wear thin if repeated).

That's a fair criticism Colton and I think also probably the most common one. This has more embellishments than any other Fleet Foxes record, but at times the frills overlap and they're going for too much at once.
Mostly it's just breathtakingly beautiful, though.

I'm with Colton 100% here. The way this is produced makes it feel so, weightless? I know that can be a good thing but nothing begs for repeated listens as a whole. It is a very beautiful album at points, just nowhere near as essential and boundary pushing as Crack Up was.

Yo, nice sowing! Best review I've read of this yet. Quick question: will I enjoy this if Crack Up is the only release of theirs that I really like?
Couple things I picked up:
In para 3 I don't understand this fragment and how it fits into the sentence: "...and brass horns (they break ground on ‘A Long Way Past The Past’ and then flourish across the album’s back-end)."
And final para: "...they no longer sound[s] like bearded forest folk"

First off, thanks! This is a pretty stark departure from Crack-Up...far more clean-cut in terms of consisting of shorter, more structured folk songs as opposed to multi-part suites. It's also got a noticeably shiny luster consistent with a lot of pop releases. Nothing about this is guaranteed from one's opinion of their previous work.
What I was trying to say in para 3 was that the brass first surfaces in the aforementioned song but then really comes alive across the back 1/3 or so of the record. In terms of its relationship to the rest of the sentence, it was the second part of a broader point that Fleet Foxes are introducing new sonic elements. It makes sense to me unless I'm missing something. The part about bearded forest folk is goofy at best, ha. I ought to consider changing that.
