This album was disappointing after After the Party, but it was pretty enjoyable. I agree that this version is good, but suffers the same issues. The songs aren't as memorable as we're used to from The Menzingers. Great review, pos'd

I really enjoyed the new versions of I can't stop drinking and Anna. I do think Farewell Youth got done dirty tho but that just maybe because the original is so good.

Thanks guys!
Sounds like there's a bit of consensus on some of the winning and losing songs on this version

as a huge fan of hello exile this isnt doing as much for me as id hoped and i think a big part is how bad my favorite songs translated (strain your memory and farewell youth especially, which are both in my top 10 menzos)

I agree with pretty much everything you said here. Good review!

I loved after the party, but have failed to resonate at all with the Exile releases. Something is missing. To draw a weird comparison, Silversun pickups most recent release left me with the same feeling. It was fine, but failed to live up to ALL of their prior discography which makes me never care to revisit.

I didn't love Hello Exile but for the most part this is just a worse version of every song. They could have just planted Greg and Tom with their guitars in front of mic and had them run through the songs. I could have listened to that. Instead this has a weird overproduction thing going on where they're trying to liven up these arrangements loud percussion, electric bass, or other instruments because the songs sound so lifeless.

"Was hoping for more things like 'America Pt. 2' where songs were even more reimagined"
This 100%. At the very least the redone version of that song should've been on here. Overall this is fine but not something I imagine I'll revisit too often.

Always felt that the tone of this reimagining fit the lyrical tone much, much better than the original album. I come back to this regularly but have forgotten what the original versions even sound like.

I think the melancholy in the t/t, I Can't Stop Drinking, Anna, and Farewell Youth hit so much harder on this. It's the more upbeat ones that probably suffer - especially Strain Your Memory - but I'm also a sucker for the folky americana sound here.

my beef with this is they heavily fucked with all the vocal parts and made all of them worse imo. like why would i listen to these versions when they more or less switched up the core parts of the songs dna that i dig and replaced it with stuff i dont
