"it laments the tropes of modern pornography (“it's all stepmums and stepsisters now, what the fuck's all that about?”)"

a pertinent question lol

Neither had I Dewi. Now I want to understand how they evolved to create this masterpiece. And yes, brilliantly presented review. I was able to digest it easily in just a few minutes which is the hallmark of a great piece, imo. Fantastic flow accompanied by substance.

All this "this is their best record ever" stuff makes me want to defend their older and far superior work ☹️

It just sort of blows my mind that people feel this trumps Philo and the Red Thread. Nothing here is as delicate and beautiful as the Red Thread opener, like this is not a subtle record.

This was my 1st album and I'm struggling to appreciate the "delicate beauty" of their other work. This is grimy and human and I love it.

My favourite muse for instance is grimy as fuck but it does have a spidery, ethereal quality too. Or something like Deeper off the debut is incredibly beautiful. Perhaps I prefer Moffat writing in the first person, much of this sounds corny to me.

I have little leg to stand on as I am a new fan. But these words resonate deeply with me. Obviously this one is a different animal to their past work.

I think I also prefer their sort of post rock tendencies over the way they started to lean. Not that they haven't produced great song based stuff, like even with the rudimentary electronics I still prefer Cherubs to what's on offer here.

Lol, well to be fair Watch, there's lots of old fans who are loving this and rating it the way you do. I'm the one out of step here, I wish I could love this, but little moments like when he keeps reading out IMG no's in the song about old photos, it just irritates me.

That song to me is aging, longing, and acceptance spun through a bizarre narrative about cranking one out in secret. The ending talking about his spouse almost looking like they used to in dim light is one of my favorite parts of the album.

The talk of navigating his computer and image files annoyed me too until I had a complete story to wrap my head around.
