there are three phases of the band: rawer black metal with live drumming (debut and demos), compressed synthy classics (minas morgul, dol guldur, night shade forests), less compressed more cinematic (stronghold - present), make sure you sample a release from each period, but ya i think this is a good starting album because it's the classic sound, gets kinda boring though, i think stronghold and lugburz are the two LPs that never aged for me after nearly 20 years of jammin, and lugburz is just super fuckin underrated. also lost tales is fuckin fun and underrated too, super dreamy synth with some vocal samples from the films
