I can't confidently delve into the details of what makes someone sound like they fuck, so maybe that's my problem. I think I get your general beef with the album though. I definitely knew going in that this would be an album with a wide range of reactions.

sounding as factory-made and short on personality as this does + repping horniness as a primary appeal = kiss of death 99 times out of 100. reminds me of how empty i felt at the end of the new SZA (not an album i'd compare in any other sense though)

exception would maybe be if the alb in question is a (plausibly) ironic post-sexual Kim Petras - Slut Pop deal, and even then odds are it still sucks for a bulk of other reasons

I respect the negative opinions surrounding this because they're easy enough to understand, but for me, this thing bangs.

Kinda think early '10s Ke$ha fucking slays on this

Not sure I understand the Kesha reference, but early 2010s Kesha was awful and this is not really all that much like it.

This is very clearly an ancestor of Ke$ha's trashy girl anthem music imo, the only difference is Ke$ha was a few years ahead of the Lorde/Halsey sadgorl turn and Dead Petz wasn't around yet to be a bad influence. Don't think it's a strange comparison whatsoever

I don't think trashy is an inheritable musical quality, and either way, low bar sexual innuendo pre-dates Kesha by several decades.

Musically, I'm not sure I hear the overlap either. Kesha had more in common with the 3OH3 types at the time, while Cabello (only on her latest) aligns more closely to Charli, Ariana Grande, or even FKA Twigs.

I'll definitely admit I'm no genre history expert though, so I'm just speaking from my personal listening experience which is not even close to all-encompassing.

are people really comparing this to Charli stylistically? have not read around this album much, but i had assumed that the Brat comparisons people have been complaining about were drawn more between that album being a masterclass in using ultra-immediate pop language to draw up a complex self-portrait vs. this being as shallow as they come. do not hear much in common between the two, would have to look back to mixtape-era Charli to find a comparison that sat well (which maybe accounts for how dated a lot of this sounds to me)

I heard Charli and Ariana immediately, although I doubt hardcore fans of either will find this to be as good. Personally, I like the middle ground this seems to occupy between the two. It's not as traditional as Ariana or as experimental as Charli, but it takes quality elements from both of their styles.

"are people really comparing this to Charli stylistically?"

If you look at the actual music between the two, this is not really very much like Charli, but ultimately Camila is aping Charli's aesthetic and experimental impulse - I think that this is undeniable. And with Katy's new one coming out, it seems as though Camila isn't the only one following this trend. Based on the small snippet available (it's horrible btw), neither Katy nor Camila really *get* what makes Charli (as well as other hyperpop and co. artists) interesting and compelling.

I agree she's definitely aware of Charli and, intentionally or not (most likely the latter), emulating her. Doesn't bother me. I may actually like this than most of BRAT, but then again, I've never been a Charli stan and this feels more readily enjoyable (to me).

Comparisons aside, I enjoyed this. It’s lacking in staying power but on a minute-to-minute basis it’s a pretty good time

I feel the same. I don't really get the melodies lodged in my brain, but this packs a dopamine hit that keeps bringing me back.

Yah Chanel no. 5/Pretty When I Cry have some legit staying power, they'll probably live in my playlists long enough to justify rating this a little higher. Still think June Gloom is my least favorite song I've heard so far this year

Yeah June Gloom is just okay. BOAT would've been a great closer instead.

Just curious, what do you find enjoyable about that song? It just sounds like bad Lana to me, but maybe I'm missing something

Also, new nitpick, inconsistently alternating how you capitalize your song titles is infuriating

Again, it's not a great song, but I do enjoy that buzzing synthesizer (?) in the background throughout and her voice is just breezy/soothing enough. I like LDR anyway fwiw. Lyrically it's probably her worst.
