"Screamland" sounds like if he gave it an organic instrumental and didn't compress the production that much, he'd have a decent song. But by god does it sound like my speakers went out midway through

I see that as a feature not a bug, Alan Sparhawk is on that track and I see it as aligned with the kind of things he’s done recent in Low and even the better moments of that solo record. Call it something like drone pop.

Amazing driving album

Tbh I found Alan's solo album to be just a series of terrible missteps. I kinda excused it as being just a fuck-about to pass the time with while dealing with Mimi's passing, didn't expect it to be a serious artistic pursuit that...

As long as you mean that they've turned the compression to 10 out of 10 in settings

Kinda agree with a few others here that I'm a bit tired of his shtick at this point, but the man can make some incredible tunes. The title track and Mental Health are both fantastic, and a few other really great tracks here as well - this could grow on me as a whole.

Screamland might be my least favourite actually - it reminds of ‘reality tv show finale’ music. That might be the point but that chorus is not my jam.
First four songs are a decent run through…I might basically be done with this album at the half way mark, that might be the issue here.

Yeah, first half of the albums 4/5…second half a 2.5 for me. Closer is a reminder of the last album. The funk shuffle ‘epic’ doesn’t earn the runtime. Being You is a snoozer with a non chorus. Screamland having a Guetta sheen to the chorus is distracting.
First four there isn’t a classic imo but each song is very decent, the opener I’d name the highlight and a 4.5/5 track. Accidental Dose close behind, Sea Change strings.
Downgrade to 3 rating after six listens because the vocals (intonations and melodies) being so samey to previous releases drags it lower.

I’m not too far off from that take overall, I do love “Screamland” as mentioned and I’m not sold on Accidental Dose yet (strings are great though) but on the whole I think this is weirdly less than the sum of its parts. That might just be the fatigue though. Def my favorite since Pure Comedy regardless.

Yeah, even with a 3 rating this is still my favourite since 'Pure Comedy', as 'GFC' was more forgettable than this.
Another problem with this one is I feel the first four songs cover all his established styles straight off the bat...the epic sweeping opener harking back to Honeybear, the snarky sort-of rocker, the more contemp folk 'Accidental Dose', then the old timey matinee weepy 'Mental Health'. They're about as good as you'd expect him to deliver in each of those styles he likes.
There's literally nowhere else to go after those...he gets desperate really. Modern bombastic production touches on 'Screamland', and the 'tiring funk' of 'Time' that just doesn't really convince though it's ok, bit standard.

Screamland sounds like it was originally intended for late stage Muse

This is real good. Maybe special good for me - I could see this being on the top of his discography for me, and I love all of the previous 5

It's a bit more plain and out in the open with its intentions than Pure Comedy, but the urgency, babe. It's splendid to hear

Also yeah the jank switch up on Screamland, can’t tell if I love it or want to burn it with fire. Has a charm to it, but feel like if it stuck with the choices and textures it opens with it’d be a really lovely restrained thing. Shrugs

It should have been a standard FJM song, as it would have been a very good one, the switch isn't done well - Justin Vernon does this stuff all the time and knows how to pull it off...that chorus sounds off

This is pleasant, but other than the first, third and fourth track, I don't find it that memorable. Much better than his previous album though! Couldn't get into that one at all

I know what you're saying about the Screamland chorus - it's a bit jarring - but I also like the thorniness of it. It's got a nice desperation to it. Also sounds like something Chino Moreno would possibly pen
