I love taking the kid to the pub, but only the pub garden - eff off you lot! ;)

I also loved going to pub gardens as a kid, one of the most nostalgic things ever for me now, and if you missed out on that you missed out big time. I was a country boy though and it is more a country pub thing.

I think a lot of my sense of England and being English was formed being a kid being around pubs, seeing people drinking and chatting in the sun, being given some crisps and a coke, it was quality. Think it's why I love a pub crawl now, get this strange excitement going to a new pub even though in reality you have to concede a lot are actually quite crap and/or generic. There's a magic with it and there's nothing better than taking your kid to the pub garden on a sunny day, was a rare moment of unbridled joy at the tail end of covid for me anyway...

Yeah this is hovering in AOTY territory for me as well. Never expected it to tbh.

A better listen with Sowing's alt. track list, just like AMSP: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?reviewid=88110&page=13#comments

Glad you enjoyed, Talons.

I find this on par with Radiohead's stronger material.

Nice. If it's anywhere near as good as this then I could have two Smile albums on my 2024 list.

just when I thought people couldn't possible need / want more, there is more...

and they do! (apparently)

I'm leaving my enjoyment of RH and related projects in the past and this detachment from Yorke's newer material may actually be a blessing. We'll see

It’ll be the off cuts from the first two albums. Probably a bit shit.

if it's anything like the trend with Radiohead the b-sides will absolutely mug most of what they put on the albums lol

I Quit really reminds me of Tinker Tailor, which makes me think that these two albums have ultimately been a progression of what Radiohead were doing on AMSP.

The delay pedal riffs and solos on a track like Identikit are all over the Smile's 3 albums (Thin Thing, Under Our Pillows, Zero Sum, Just Eyes and Mouth) and take a much more prominent role. The strings were the most prominent element on AMSP, and here they're just as prevalent but are used in more unconventional ways, mixed with sounds like psych rock and electronica (especially on Wall of Eyes, the album).

I have no idea when Radiohead will be back. I was thinking Cutouts might have been them cleaning out all their unreleased songs, to start Radiohead fresh; this especially seemed the case since so many Radiohead ideas were brought to fruition with The Smile with tracks like Open the Floodgates and Skrting and concepts like the 'wall of eyes/ice' (the image of a wall of eyes goes all the way back to the old Kid A blips). But but with talk of a US tour, Colin now touring with Nick Cave for the forseeable, Phil doing his solo work and Ed preparing a new album and tour, I really wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with another 2 The Smile albums before Radiohead returns.

I also think when Radiohead do come back, it'll be a continuation of everything The Smile have done, as opposed to them simply picking up where AMSP left off (since that's what A Light for Attracting Attention basically did). No doubt Ed, Phil and Colin's musical ventures since 2016 will also be huge influences.

Unsolicited ramblings there, listening to Wall of Eyes again and just love it. Very excited for Cutouts and whatever happens next.
