the attention to dynamics on For Dinner alone has more nuance and character to it than any guitarist you have ever gone to bat for (including Justin Trosper - love him, but his guitar style is p much a means to a skronky end compared to anything here except mayb Nosferatu Man)
and if you're not hearing that because aww baby the tones are a little raw, then you're either a poor listener or a bland player and I'm not sure why you're trying to bait me into calling you out as either

thinking a critique of an album’s guitar can only be made along the lines of the tones being raw… now there’s an actual self own. For Dinner does probably have the best guitar on the album, but only because it’s implemented with a subtlety that doesn’t reveal the way his sense of dynamics completely falls apart when any level of aggression or energy is utilized, and doesn’t bring the complete lack of rhythmic fluidity to the forefront. you can argue his playing is meant to be static and choppy, but I would disagree. it sounds distinctly like how a very amateurish guitarist plays, and if that’s intentional then the only pertinent question is dear god why

what are you talking about when i walk down the street other people's animals run up and hug me
ftr i have never heard anything colton's played beyond (appropriately) straightforward rhythm trax, so do not read any targeted judgement into that
but i do not understand how someone who deeply understands how to express themselves through an amplified guitar could go through this and shrug the entire performance off
"his sense of dynamics completely falls apart when any level of aggression or energy is utilized"
there are a load of highly pronounced jagged contrasts on here (Don + Washer fav examples) that are integral to the songwriting. amateurish guitarists switch their dynamics erratically yes, but mistaking that for the shifts here (which are generally between modulating dynamics within a incredibly tight range to sudden bursts of noise, again Washer perf example) is simplistic at best and obtuse at worst

feel bad for everyone who survived 100 pages of sleep token thread with her. it's a special level of piss that gets me out of my groove to bat for the white album, trust

I played Don Aman to the rhythm of Wonderwall earlier in this thread, was that not enough?
but seriously though, if I think the guitar on this is as bad as I say I do (which I do) I don’t know why you seem to think I’m flexing my own ability somehow, I’m not at all. I just really don’t like the guitar on this album for a few different reasons, I think I should be able to express that without your rebuttal being framed around my own playing. I wouldn’t use your Mooncat project to discredit your ramblings about Teen Dream, or even something more similar in sound

also we’re still making the noise funk album I know I haven’t sent anything in a while, current living situation makes recording near impossible but I do have like 7-8 new recordings ready to go

Never suggested you were flexing over this, but it confuses me to see this slammed for amateurism by a guitarist when it so clearly showcases such proficiency in key, commonly understated areas of technique (dynamics and timbral voicing) to me
Peeps can and should use Mooncat to discredit anything I say tbqh, Mooncat 6 gonna burn my entire review archive to the ground when it drops (soon)
But yes yes gimme that noise funk

yeah that applies more to evilford and squiggly with their "oh so you think you can do better?" comments
what is meant by proficiency in key? and dynamics are one of if not the most important traits for a good guitarist to have imo, I just don't really hear them being utilized well on this album. I guess I will give it another proper listen but I listened before while paying attention to them and still really didn't like it, but it could partially be that I find the progressions and rhythms so unappealing at their core that proficiency in terms of dynamics becomes less effective for me. but unless my memory of this has completely faded, that's only part of the issue
