indeed he does sound like quite an earnest fellow, reminds me of emo in the vein of capn jazz

'leave the Dismemberment Plan's smelly college journal antics away from this pure band please'
isnt one of the tracks on this a mishmash of cliches
thats the definition of smelly college journal antics

if you mean You Were Right, then not really a mismatch - very clear narratorial standpoint there, those images don't sound overthought or intertextual in the way they would coming from, like, TDP or MM
that song gains rather than loses the more you take it at face value, which is another q underdiscussed thing that gave this band such an edge (in the least edgy way). so much more frank than the neurotic glib that 90s indie lives and dies for
although they also have some ace clever lyrics

i will mash your balls. and still, those lines don't have the self-aware citational malaise that put the college in college writing (e.g. in lyricists who try to use dead metaphors as living metaphors). martsch is just taking figures of speech by their natural usage
and modest mouse (isaac brock is probs the biggest culprit in music re. that last point)

dont threaten me with a good time
and i have never been able to get into modest mouse, always seemed a tad too twee
|

there are a couple of hokey moments on LCW and (especially) Long Drive, but yh generally more on the gritty end. Moon and Antarctica was when that side took over

Nothing wrong with a little twee

Gave this a few proper spins last week, and since then I can’t wake up without having either Carry the Zero or Broken Chairs going on in my head, which is great! Have checked few live versions of both tracks on youtube, but the studio versions are superior for both imo. Attending a gig would probably make a difference, though.

Twee can color the day when it comes to Belle and Sebastian or Yo La Tengo, but I can’t hear any twee in MM’s LCW. That LP’s just weird indie rock in the best possible sense.

I get twee for modest mouse tbh tho personally I feel like their early post-hardcore influences kind of give them an edge to hedge that with. Same deal with the like classic rock solos and stuff on built to spill
