I'm not saying I understand most of them either. But saying that Radiohead is just not about the lyrics is a real kick in the face of Thom Yorke.

I just listen to Radiohead because they sound so damn good.

Radiohead's lyrics are what make Radiohead so amazing. They're bold and dark, truly amazing. Climbing up the Walls off OK Computer has some of their best lyrics ever, as well as The Tourist and Exit Music. The statement "Radiohead's never been high on lyrics" is completely wrong, im sorry.

Med's rating is good but he was pretty hard on a few of the songs. He's right about there being no "album sound" to it, but don't let that stop you cheeto. I listen to it from time to time, too.

I haven't listened to 'Hail to the Thief' in weeks. I think of it as a b-side Radiohead album, although whenever I listen to it I am usually surprised by how much I actually like the album. I've had this album since the day it came out and it has yet to click with me.

Like a few weeks is a long time, Zebra. There are some albums I have that I haven't listened to in years.

What exactly does B-side mean?
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.2
A B-Side is an old term. When they made records and stuff, there would be a single on an album, and on the other side of the record, there would be a song they wouldnt use on the album, and they put it on Side B of the record.

A b-side is composed of songs that were recorded with another album but didn't make onto the final cut. For instance, Steal This Album is a Toxicity b-sides, because they made 30 songs, but only put 14 on Toxicity. The songs from Amnesiac were recorded during Kid A, but I've been told they were made together to be on their own album.

Oooh thanks guys. I though it was something like a second CD in a two-CD album.

I'm really digging this album. Sail To The Moon is so good. I love the dark piano. The Gloaming is also a very crunkalicious song.

I just put this album back on after a few months, and wow. Why did I not listen to this? Everything is amazing again!
Somehow, "We Suck Young Blood" really grew on me. I like to 'slow clap' along with it. However, I still just can't get into "The Gloaming". And I never realised just how good of a song "Where I End and You Begin" really was - that's the track I have on most often these days.
Some of these songs are absurdly good.

I disagree. Their lyrics fit the music, but it isn't the main focus, and it isn't the best part about them, either. The parts I love about Radiohead are things like the climax in Exit Music (For A Film), not little lyrical bits.

You still have to admit, though, that Thom is a talented lyricist. While the lyrics aren't typically what "make" a Radiohead song, they certainly help: The climax in "Exit Music", for instance, wouldn't have been quite as powerful without the incredibly haunting lyrics at the end, and the whole "We hope that you choke". And songs on this record like "Where I End and You Begin" and "There, There" are often carried by the lyrics. "I will eat you alive, there'll be no more lies" is very powerful, and really made that song (aside from the bass riff). And "There, There" is a great lyrical showcase. How about Thom's freestyling on "A Wolf at the Door"? While lyrics aren't typically the focus of Radiohead songs, there are those amazing instances where they are that can't be ignored.

Great review, Med. This, while a great album, is my least favorite Radiohead album. For some reason, the lack of cohesion really grates on me. While there are some great tracks here, I see a lot of it as filler. And am I the only one who doesn't like Myxamatosis?

I don't like "Myxamatosis" as much as everyone else, but I still think it's a great song. Especially if you know what the disease is... also, for lines like "No one likes a smart ass/but we all love stars".

I think Where I End and You Begin is probably the perfect song. Those lyrics are so incredible, so enigmatic, while the background music floats around and just envelops you in this amazing atmosphere. Not to mention that catchy-as-hell bass riff and a climax to end all climaxes. "I will eat you alive, there'll be no more lies."
This album keeps getting better. To me, it is the best Radiohead album, because so many influences are put into this one giant melting pot. I like the prevalence of piano as well as some great guitar and synth work from Jonny Greenwood.
There There is also one of the coolest songs. So catchy, yet extremely well-written. The Gloaming is creepy and haunting. Like someone said, a lot of these songs are just absurdly good.
Also, the way they allow the guitar to interact naturally with the piano is very unique and appealing. Just great songwriting, there's nothing else to it.This Message Edited On 03.19.06

This is a damn fine review and I agree with you completely. It's a 4 in my book, because not all the songs are top notch like Kid A or OK Computer. Switch Where I End And You Begin with Go To Sleep and we agree completlely.
I do like The Gloaming though. That's got a great vocal hook. And We Suck Young Blood was really creepy, though it does drag on too long. This Message Edited On 03.19.06
