Smile Sessions and this both have their place in my heart.
"I prefer wild honey over this."
I'm so sorry to hear that.

I mean to me, it's more than just goofy and fun, it's also super melancholy and creepy and tender a lot of the time too, it's almost like a reflection of Brian Wilson's psyche
I guess some songs from Surf's Up also feel this way, but for this it's like the whole album

"also smiley smile over pet sounds wtf lmao"
Smiley Smile is one of my favorite albums of all time, I'm talking potentially top 10, if that helps, like I actually consider this a masterpiece
Also, I legit really don't like Sloop John B, and there's nothing on here I don't like
|
| |
yeah sloop john b is pretty horrid agreed
havent heard this in full, need to change that

“sloop john b” is just fine but Pet Sounds is a 10. Only song I really really dig on Smile(y Smile) is Cabinessence imho, but at least that song invented animal collective

I can honestly see an argument for this over Pet Sounds, like Pet Sounds is great but it's also very capital-M Mature and if you prefer music that doesn't take itself super seriously this is probably the Beach Boys album for you

Most places?
"Every time I get the inspiration
To go change things around
No one wants to help me look for places
Where new things might be found
Where can I turn when my fair weather friends cop out?
What's it all about?"
for example

It's mostly very midtempo, heavily-orchestrated Burt Bacharach-type stuff with lyrics about the ennui of adulthood and whatnot. It's not like dour or anything but compared to their early stuff its not exactly a party with friends lol.

listening to this rn. can see how its more ars-core than pet sounds but not sure how i feel about it yet. heroes and villains is incredible tho for sure

I guess their saddest song is A Day in the Life of a Tree from Surf's Up

I Just Wasn't Made for These Times is literally about feeling socially isolated by the world because you don't fit in
That's Not Me and I Know There's An Answer are about wanting to be an adult and be independant, but realizing it's better to fall back on your loved ones
Sloop John B is about a bad vacation or something
And there's 2 instrumentals, BUT yeah the other 7 are about girls

I never knew there were Beach Boys fans that disliked Sloop John B. That remains one of my favorites by them
This hasnt really clicked with me so far, but it's definitely an interesting album
