FREE WILLIE!!! No, not from jail. From that damn bus! No one gets worse live reviews than Willie and the Family. Sure, they love him, they wait to shake his hand at at the end of the show and they will cherish that moment forever. Not Willie. He can't wait to get back to the bus. Willie is at that point in his life (As is Dylan, but not Neil Young) where he needs to hook up with a Rick Rubin type and do what Johnny Cash did. They make great ventilation systems these days, and it's a lot harder to get caught when your off that damn bus. I could see Willie singing some Radiohead. David Byrne. Maybe even Bjork. And Beck. When Willie sings I hear America. Get some crack acoustic guitarist in there, maybe 2 0r 3. Duets? They could make 50 albums of duets. Willie and James Taylor. Willie with Wilco. Hell, Willie and Tweedy alone is enough to give me chest pains of possibilities.
Maybe this latest legal adventure is a godsend. Maybe the judge remembers Willie as I do. And sentences him to life. In the studio. But a nice studio with seats and chairs like in the bus. And security and watchdogs to keep him safe from those who would do harm and bust this National Treasure.

American Series is incredible and I too have always wondered if he'd do something similar towards the "end of his career". Although I found Country Music and American Classic to be two good albums, it would be quite interesting to see if Rubin could do something similar, no disrespect to what T Bone did for him on Country Music.

This is sooooo good but it bothers me that he only wrote about half of the songs according to the credits.
|
| |
it's not like he had songwriters working for him. they're his renditions of some older 1930s/40's
country standards. covers were incredibly common place in older country music. hell covers gave waylon
jennings a career.

Yeah, I know, but it's still half of the album. I'll still 4.5. If you didn't notice, I've just decided to get into the old country more.

get Hank Williams Jr.'s Greatest Hits and compare A Country Boy Can Survive to GYBE

Hank III seems to be the only stainless soul in country. I'm sure you'd agree with me since your review refers to how crappy country is nowadays and how some of the ancients have turned into commercialized celebrities.

this album has been a favorite ever since I heard a medley of the 'stranger' tracks on the excellent 1978 live album simply titled "Willie and Family Live" (another must-hear if you dig this album) that I stole from my grandma. "the bright lights of denver, were shining like diamonds. Like ten thousand jewels in the night."
