I liked his last album, Saturdays=Youth.

Better than this, or shall I start with this first?

a fourth?

I really feel like I'm missing something with this album. I really like the intro track, but other than that it just feels like the dorkiest album ever. I haven't liked much since Before the Dawn Heals Us though.

agree, this definitely grows off aside from the best best tracks ('wait')

I actually don't think this is his best but it gets pretty close, and it's certainly his most representative. If you liked the 80's retro feeling, maybe start with Saturday=Youth. If you felt the ambient interludes to be your thing, try Digital Shades. And for the bigger, synth layered tracks (My Tears are Becoming a Sea, Echoes, Outro) then check Before the Dawn Heals Us or Dead Cities.

I preordered this awhile back, even though I've heard it a bunch already I am pretty excited to go home and have it sitting on my doorstep.

Great review. We'll just have to see if my attention span can get me through the entire 22 tracks.

I really can't stand this album, unfortunately. It has maybe 4 great songs throughout, but that's not saying much when it's a double-album.
The track with the child made me embarrassed. Instant-skip right there.

"here, it just sounds so damn right" So damned true. The way beth/rest sounds 80's on Bon Iver I dispise but everyhting that reminiscent of the 80's here is just golden. Don't know why.

@br3adman --- This is "dorky" and "cheesy", but its meant to be... I mean the review makes pretty clear of that..
Just think of this album as taking the genre of shitty-to-mediocre 80's pop music, and making it better in almost every facet imaginable... its such an improvement that it feels original and fresh, even with all the synth heavy throw back bands coming around the past few years
the review explains much better, well written good sir

I'm a bit of a nerd about this sort of thing, but the packaging for this album is quite nice
