for whatever reason, right before I decided to listen to this, I was talking to someone and they began crying. they had a dream
about the death of their cousin that happened a year ago, and it scared them. and then I'm introduced to this album?
unreal coincidence. but what a beautiful transition in life and to me a beautiful album. Dogs, I watched the film..., and I can't
live without my mother are my favorite

Obviously you recommend this, but would you consider this to be the best starting point for the band?

I don't know how to answer that, really. I can't even pretend to have heard everything Mark Kozelek has released.
Having said that, his best work with Sun Kil Moon is (in mine and many others' opinion) Ghosts of the Great Highway, which as it's their first as well would probably be "the best" place to start.
I can't imagine you miss anything by starting here though. You can always come back and listen to it in context later.

I'm really not sure how i feel about this. There are definitely some great things going on musically and melodically, but some
of the songs take a while to really get off their feet. Also, some of the lyrics here are pretty stupid: I see what you mean about
their meandering that helps paint a better picture, but there are some lines that I just found to be completely cringe-worthy.
Also what's up with all the Panera references?

I can see why people could either hate this with a passion or love it completely. Some of the lines are really cringe-worthy, but I think it's one of those cases where it just wouldn't be the same without it's occasional awkward flatness. It's an album about coping with death and mortality, but it's also about being flawed and imperfect. I think at the heart of the album is this struggle to communicate something that's very difficult to put words to, and those moments where he falls flat in communicating this seem almost deliberate, like a sort of acknowledgment that sometimes we fall short of saying what we're trying to say.
I can empathize with that because I'm an awkward shit, so I love this album to death.
