It's probably because it's all the same style...if you're not absolutely in love with the the hushed folk sound, I can see that happening

The weird thing is, I am. Big Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, etc. fanboy. That said, I can't imagine it'll receive anything more than intermittent rotation on my decks, despite it being hard-hitting and emotive.

great albums don't require constant rotation to fully appreciate.

This album is so depressing.

I can't rate it yet, because I've only heard it a couple times and it is hard for me to get into the proper mindset to prepare me for full mental collapse at the hands of one of the best singer/songwriters of my time.

This is a solid, soul-baring album, but I'm running into the same problem InfamousGrouse is running into. Everything meshes too much into an ocean of the same hushed folksy sounds. Maybe this will change the more I listen, but right now I can't see my rating changing.

I wonder why they switched up the track order on the vinyl

I really liked Eugene into Fourth of July

AmerianFlagAsh, you commented on the trio of Eugene - Fourth of July - The Only Thing. So far, I think the "holy trinity" of this album is Fourth of July - The Only Thing - Carrie & Lowell. Those three songs back to back almost feels too good to be true.

Can't rate this yet because I need a few more listens. One thing's certain, though: this is a damn good album.

"great albums don't require constant rotation to fully appreciate."

truth, my AOTY last year was Home Like NoPlace Is There and I listen to it maybe once a month because it's so terrifyingly visceral.

great review, sowing. never listened to sufjan before but this sounds pretty amazing

Thank you so much everyone, the compliments mean a lot because I put a lot of time into this review.

I feel like this is creeping closer to a 5 for me but I made a new rule fro myself not to 5 anything within the first month of listening. We'll see how long I'm able to stick to that lol.
