The vocals sound atrocious. The way they are mixed make them sound monotonous and robotic. It doesn't help that they are layered far too much (as the reviewer pointed out). I also agree with the reviewer's statement: "California is absolutely loaded with the glossy, layered style of production associated with those bands. …Here, the pop comes first and the punk sometimes makes its way into the mix of elements intended to make the song as catchy as possible." Blink-182 took absolutely no risks with the music and the production. On a normal day, I wouldn't care as much for the lack of originality. However, in California's case, the aforementioned plus the bad production make a bland and annoying album.

Album is borderline trash. Other than Cynical, Bored To Death and No Future (which are decent at the absolute most) this thing is laughable. 3 chord, bland as can be approach. Plus, the lyrics? Good god man. Lyrics such as...
"I'm in deep with this girl, but she's out of her mind."
"I know I messed up and it might be over. But, let me call you when I'm sober."
"I wanna see some naked dudes."
"There's something about you that I can't quite put my finger in."
Those are only a few examples of the shitty lyrics. Not to mention the song titles. 'Kings Of The Weekend'? 'Teenage Satellites'? 'Brohemian Rhapsody'? They're how old again?.. Matt and Travis are 40. Mark is 44...

Halfway through this and it's making Neighbourhoods seem like a classic.

"what is wrong with the production? give me examples. so many users on this site constantly complain about "production" without ever giving examples."
Everything about the vocals sounds awfully processed and fake. I'm definitley not against vocal effects but when your album sounds like Five seconds of summer and All time low...you've got a problem.
And don't get me started on how bad the gang vocals sound.

Got through about 10 tracks on the way to work...this sounds just mundane and lacking. It's too simple (I know blink were never famous for complexity in songwriting) and it's as if the self titled album never happened. Far too many na na nas and woah oh ohing going on for me. Travis lays down some awesome beats but it doesn't save the songs.
Vocals also sound too processed and Matt Skiba doesn't really sound like himself
Probs gonna end up a 2.5 if I'm feeling nice

"It's as if the self titled album never happened"
So much this. The self titled album was a damn mature album (at least by blink standards). Not sure why they're going backwards and making lame party songs in their 40's...

I still like the singles. Most of the other stuff however... ugh.
Skiba rules tho

It's overly fun easy listening sugary pop-punk, which is what blink-182 have always been. Really don't understand the amount of hate for this, it was never gonna be groundbreaking musical genius or even close to that. I had a blast listening to it, and that's all I want from blink-182

Sorely let down by this album! Feels way too overly produced and i think Matt Skiba should have had way more lead vocal parts. Good review though!

Never thought I'd say this, but I really miss Tom's guitar playing on this album. No memorable riffs to speak of.

imo it's not a bad album, just a standard and mediocre pop rock record. for a blink album it's pretty awful though.

decent review. your approach to this as a pop-punk record is misguided, mark has taken the lead of this band now and with feldmann in there, it's clearly just a pop record. and a pretty good one imo. yes, the whoas and nanas are overdone, but i found this record enjoyable as a summer pop record. the guys are much older now, and you cant really compare it to albums that are almost 20 years old tbh

Listening to this for the first time, and it's not bad at all. I agree with BlackTaxi, this review spends too much time wishing this was a style of music the band haven't really done since Take Off Your Pants... and then penalizing the shit out of them for it.
