I haven’t even checked Foley Room, might do that one first... especially if this is more on the ambient/experimental side of things.

I'd say listening to the progression between Foley Room and here is pretty crucial context honestly

I see Foley Room as the beginning of his second phase, cause everything before that one is more beat-driven, jazzy, and imo noirish

Cool, will do then. I’ve only heard the Brocolage to Supermodified triumvirate & felt each release progressed into something stronger. Curious to see what else this guy has done.

beginning of his 3rd phase imo
Cujo through Permutation was his breaks/d&b/acid jazz mastery
then he shifted away from that into slower, more sci-fi sounding trip hop soundscape shit for Supermodified through Splinter Cell (the 'spy music' phase) and then on to this field recording, electroacoustic, idm, borderline industrial musical sculpture shit for Foley

That makes sense. There's still a lot of jazz and d&b up to the Splinter Cell album. Foley Room-present is really different from all his previous stuff, aside from the Infamous score and the tracks he did for Splinter Cell: Conviction. I hear traces of his soundtracks on this more than I do in Isam or Foley Room, which I like.

this is pretty different from the stuff he released before he changed his last name from Amarth

Well I think there are plenty of quintessentially 'Tobin' elements that have carried over from phase to phase. He has certain distinct chords and sounds that he uses that I've never quite heard emulated anywhere else, but I do feel that the change in direction between Permutation and Supermodified is every bit as easily notable as the transition to Foley Room. In either case the shift is still encapsulated in an unmistakably 'Tobin' sound-set.
Listening to and talking about new Amon Tobin has made me come to the realization that he might be the first electronic artist that I ever listened to frequently and loved. I remember I was already a fan of all of his work by the time I was in grade 10 and I can't think of any other electronic artists that I know I loved before grade 11. Don't think I had even started listening to Boards of Canada yet.

This is super cool. Sounds like Amon Tobin & Tim Hecker have been reading out of similar books recently

Have a feeling this will grow on me because I was super tired when I jammed this yesterday, Foley remains my fave for now

I really like this style but haven't been able to get through a whole album by Fennesz or Tim Hecker for some reason, despite trying many times. Maybe one or both will click with me sometime in the future.

Konoyo by Hecker is a lot like this and it took me like a year for it to click for me. It's possible!

I listened to a few tracks from that last year and it was interesting, I really liked the song In Mother Earth Phase.

Oh nice, I really like that Hecker album from last year. This should be good.

was expecting a lot more from this. just did not click with me at all unfortunately. I can see how this would though, because the sound design and production is good. maybe I'm just not in the right frame of mind, so will try again a few more times.

This is definitely a grower imo, my rating changed many times before settling. I may have even had this at a 3 at one point.
I listened to Supermodified, OfOW, and a bunch of Chaos Theory (there’s like 3 discs of material, all of it excellent, beyond the short 1-disc official release) this past week, and the change from his ‘90s material was more apparent to me. I had remembered them being more similar to his previous albums, but this time I heard a lot of the Chaos Theory styles in all of them. Probably my favorite phase of his in terms of atmosphere.

A little surprised how little this is being talked about. I didn't think AT would be a fringe artist on Sput.
