I'm glad you apologized because I was deeply disturbed and angry, like heteros get when challenged. Now I can go back to listening to Perfume Genius and an assortment of country-pop in peace, like the big man that I am, and oh ily2 babe.
But in all seriousness your point was never misconstrued; Chan probably summarized it best when he said not all reviews need to engage in identity influences, but when an artist's orientation is such a big part of their music, it certainly helps. I couldn't put myself in his shoes, but that doesn't mean the review doesn't get its points across. And as I mentioned a page or so ago, I'd definitely welcome the thoughts of someone who can identify with this record’s angles from a sexual orientation perspective to provide additional depth to the discussion.
Also, just so you know, I'll be lurking around the corner for my chance when you review a straight artist's album ;-) the revenge is gonna be so sweet.

I thought this was more bombastic than before tbh

I don't think it's nearly as catchy or epic, but it's certainly more expansive in terms of him furthering his art. I like the ambient stuff which was the primary change; I just wasn't a fan of a good chunk of the other songs that weren't singles.

"i think lewis's advice is good for all of us to remember - that there might be stuff we miss about albums due to our identities (perhaps not "miss" but just won't see it in the same way as others). i don't think every review needs to engage with that or even acknowledge it, and i don't think that's what he was saying either, but it is useful to keep in mind and can unlock new critical avenues. not really replying to anyone in particular here, just saying that i appreciate the sentiment."
this is huge.
also great album

I mean I'm gay and didn't think your review was very heteronormative, you focused mostly on the sound and overall effect of the album. I guess you might me missing some points of the lyrics where as gay men we feel very connected to what he is singing, take Jason for example, but you did a good job overall. I mean music will hit different to different people.

Jason was one of several highlights.

Lol Lewis literally said this was heteronormative... Do you people not know what that means? I love how he acts as though it was misconstrued and everyone's just "bless you plane, I got what you were saying". What he was saying, by the definition, is that this review has the attitude that the only normal and natural expression of sexuality is heterosexuality. It would be one thing had he said "I wish this review focused on the gay politics more than the music" or something to that effect, but he condescended and insulted Sowing in a very not so blatant way (apparently). I'm all for opening a dialogue about these things too and getting reviews that are more political, I was just making an observation that I thought his criticism was ridiculous. Despite what people think, I don't have evil intent, and most of what Lewis was saying was just fine, and the ways others interpreted it is fine too, I'm all for considering how the context varies depending on who's listening.

I think you can understand the context in which he used the word instead of googling the dictionary definition.

man i really really wish i liked this more than i do.
but i don't.
got some dec tunes.
|

I've only ever known the word to have that meaning and to be used with generally negative connotations, so personally the context confused me a little. I know he wasn't telling Sowing to fuck himself and he had a mostly positive message but that just struck me as a misplaced and kind of offensivr criticism
