a thankee granite.
I never actually heard the bonus tracks for Song Machine, guess I'll get my czech on
Is it just me, or was their initial run kinda adjacent to the zeitgeist? Like, this shit plays with the funk/disco/synthpop shit that's defining pop rn, but dub/hip-hop/etcs of the previous era were less popular at the time? Did poptimism ruin The Gorillas? More at 6

That’s kinda just it I felt like their first couple albums had this sardonic twist to them where they were almost ~defiling~ those genre tropes with these external influences that weren’t quite so mainstream and it gave them an inimitable edge. Humanz foreword do strike me as more “poptimistic” and their music has arguably suffered for it.

the idea of Gorillaz had an ironic energy that's been dead for a while, now... It was too nihilistic, in a way?
|
| |
Don’t know if it was too nihilistic if it resulted in a much better product

They suffered the worst fate a satirist can suffer: success and influence. Can't send up a corporate art landscape shaped in part by your own reaction against it
|
| |
The irony being that I don’t feel that gorillaz used to mock the very idea of making a product and now that it actually does feel like it’s a product, it’s much less desireable

Kompy beat me to it and said it better

Judging from what you've said I think you're in for a rough ride (and I like the t/t lol)

I mean I liked the Tame Impala song and Skinny Ape, so it shouldn't be too bad
but it's a shame to have to lump a Gorillaz album in with da 3's

I like that Albarn's doing the "2D vois" again now though, cause the listless choruses he's been doing have been exhausting

It’s clearly a 4

I don’t know maybe I’m a simple man but I just want good jamz and that’s what Gorillaz has consistently delivered after Humanz, so I’m satisfied enough even if none of the newer albums are as excellent overall as DD or PB.

Possession Island kinda had capping Humanz off with We Got the Power vibes

I think I've actually gotten myself sick of "New Gold" in the build up to this, so it no longer gets to be a stand out
|
| |
We got the power is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard in my entire life
|
| |
Never liked this band? project? but I do like Milo so I'll read this review and ignore the album.
