But Luminary is so boring

nah dan has actual reasonable passable melodies on that instead of the formlessness on every other song where hes just aimlessly meandering. plus it makes efficient use of a more concise runtime where most of these songs are unjustifiably too long
smiles alright tho may have been underrating that one a tad. the arrow is an underwhelming coda tho

The Arrow is the end finale of Smile. This is my truth.

King is god mode

So much of this album is incredible. "King", "Orbital" transitioning into "Juno", "Smile" into "The Arrow".

King / Juno / Smile->The Arrow are so fucking good. I think there's some missed opportunities on the rest, but that portion is downright sublime for me.

Agreed, these are the good here. This has a stellar ep in it

That was my biggest complaint about Sonder (and I'm very much in the minority who felt like it was their best work), that it just felt short and could have used maybe one or two longer tracks.

Album as a whole isn't that good, but that's standard by now for this band. Luminary is possibly the best Tesseract song. An exceptionally good song. Reminds me of how Karnivool's COTE blows the rest of the album completely out of the water.

On the one hand I agree with you, but I strongly disagree with Luminar being the best here. That song is just so mid and full of wasted potential

whenever kalk doesn't like a modern tesseract song I love it lmao luminary is top tier here ez

I can safely say that outside of Eden, and despite seeing them live 6 times or so, Luminary is their only other song of serious substance across the discography. Altered State and Polaris are passable albums, but Luminary is a better song than anything on offer there, and the best on Sonder. Crazy to me to consider the vocal melodies, arrangement, and production on Luminary 'mid' when it does similar things Eden does in one-third the run time while not fully re-treading territory the band has covered 30 times and also not cannibalizing itself during its own run time.

the utopia/phoenix combo on polaris is ez the hardest 10 min to sit through in their discog

Almost all of Altered State is irredeemably boring and unlistenable since it's just One again. And then Polaris has some real baffling shit, like Hexes existing at all, and as onionbubs pointed out, Utopia and Phoenix not being cut as B-sides.
I like this band, but kind of as a guilty pleasure, because they've really only written like 4 songs in over a decade now. Eden, Nocturne, Luminary, and maybe King or Smile. No one can honestly tell me they're huge fans of the "concept album" tracks on One that drone into eachother meaninglessly, or them releasing One AGAIN but calling it Altered State the second time around. ZZZZZzzzzzZZZZzzzz.

lol hexes is one of polaris's two redeemable cuts
i used to kinda feel guilty pleasure ish about this band but also i think the new one whips a colossal amount of ass so they have escaped that tier

No waaaaay, Tourniquet and Survival for sure. The "rap part(?)" of Hexes makes me want to jump off a bridge in Minecraft.

it's at 2:46 while Dan is jackin' off. It's like watching Bob Ross on Twitch and chat screaming "ruined" - only Bob isn't there to miraculously save the song later, it just sticks out like a sore thumb while the song continues and I'm supposed to pretend it didn't happen 'cause Dan is crOOMING all over the place. AAAH I'm gonna CROOOOON. I'm crooooooniiiing aaaaaah
