...and what a correct opinion it is!
For those looking for something similar from roughly the same time period, look for the Sentenced album called "North From Here". It's a little more raw, but I think you'd like it.

In my opinion, this is the best Death Metal album of all time. This album definitely has classic status since it was basically the first melodic death metal album, but it's by no means the best death metal album of all time...

Hence the reason I included "in my opinion" in my statement.
The fact that it can be considered one of the best leaves the door open for someone (me, for example) to legitimately believe it is the best.

I gave this album another listen. Fuck, what happened to the Amott bros? They did better work in Carcass.

This is the only album from them I really love... the first two without Michael Amott are pretty bad.

necroticism would be good if the songs were 2 or 3 minutes shorter

My bad, I honestly thought it was both of them. On a funny note, I listened to this album a bunch of times this week and thought "Why did they have to break up"? My thoughts were answered today!

They broke up due to the band becoming disinterested in metal music during the making of Swan Song, and if I remember correctly, Michael Amott left before they even started recording it.
