Still need to give this a listen, though I wish he would have kept MoTW going because I think they are way more than consistent this band

Thinking of reviewing this myself.

I can't tell if your rating is a joke or not, but I almost agree with it.

It's not. I find it odd how people are saying that the album isn't emotionally hefty at all, because the lyrics detail Yuko Sueta's almost-hallucinogenic escape world which she inhabits while she's dying, which allows the album to symbolize it through a very haunting but odd sound. All the pizzicato notes help establish a frantic, almost paranoid vibe throughout and the trumpet establishes a haunting atmosphere. Both are directly correlated to the concept and contribute magnificently to the phenomenal score. And then there are tracks like the closer which are just superb with how beautiful they are. The compiled result sounds like a jazzy laullaby, which would be a fitting way to pass on. So by taking the concept of an elegy, which has been done thousands of times before and putting that Kayo Dot twist on it while still doing justice to the musical world and the deceased, Toby Driver and Co. have deserved a classic rating and nothing less.

Austin... all you have to do now is raise Heima to classic status, and I think you and I can be friends
|
| |
I don't think I can do that.
I mean you like Sigh.
That's a no no.
|
| |
I will quite literally never be able to understand why Sigh aren't more well liked on this site; they're brilliant.

Their metal bits are completely tired, cliche and boring, their psychedelic/symphonic/electro/whatever all else is abhorrent because it's equally one-dimensional and bland, their idea of a song is equally as sterile and their definition of creativity is skewed because bad takes on black metal and whatever all else and then carelessly juxtaposing them together =/= creativity. Plus, they're prehistoric in technical prowess, their vocals are horridly ridiculous and their lyrics are some of the most soulless and cliche I've come across.
That and they drown in their oceans of silly pretense.

It's anything but one-dimensional. I understand you not liking it just because you don't like their particular sound, but to write it off as cliche and 'tired' is just ridiculous. Nothing is 'carelessly juxtaposed', it's placed there for a reason, and if you actually paid more mind to it, you should be able to notice that. Their musical themes, to me, are engaging, and it's humorous that you write it off as pretentious for being musically divergent, but most people have a tendency to do that these days; most of the scathing criticisms towards any body of music are 'it's pretentious', or, 'it's carelessly juxtaposed'.
