If you want to get into Oxbow, first listen to Naked City. You may ask yourself why. Well, the reason is that this sounds like the sludge/drone version of Naked City. It's just so goddamn bizarre. Really, I'd like it better if they didn't have vocals for that very reason. It's not entirely accurate of course, but the idea is that the music is rather strange and to have that kind of unpredictable strangeness combined with something as generally straightforward and plodding as sludge is a very unique mix. I'm surprised to say that it works at all because the two ideas seem to be polar opposites. Still, it's not quite within my tastes. A lot of it is really weird and that's fun to listen to, but if you peel back the weird it's a pretty lackluster backing throughout a good chunk of the album. Some songs stand out as being pretty good, but nothing goes beyond that either, except perhaps the closing track which happens to be a half hour track. All that said I do think it's surprising this album hasn't gotten more attention but it's not entirely my thing.

don't get me wrong, i fucking love She's a Find, but it is so misleading as to what the band is really like. that song is the most accessible Oxbow ever sounded before TBD.

@Ledd
Some folks you don't know are on your porch. They might seem friendly in a different context, but it doesn't feel right for them to be here. Not at night. The tips of their cigarettes light up sunken eyes, and they turn to you, but never right at you. Their eyes drift past vacantly to the woods behind.
Then Eugene S. Robinson kicks the door off its hinges wearing your entire family as jewelry, gargling for some reason, and the rest of the crew on the porch starts dancing a merry jig but with their heads kept completely fixed where they'd been staring

'i've heard a fair bit about these boyos, someone pitch em to me'
without reccing you a specific song, my pitch would basically be that theyre an experimental 'rock' band that largely fall somewhere between noise rock or hardcore a lot of the time (with very occasional metal flourishes). But that doesnt really do them justice because there is also a lot of blues and classical influence and all sorts.
Thats not to say theyre some sort of eclectic genre hopping band like Mr Bungle or something. its all woven into the sound pretty cohesively. and errr the vocalist is really charismatic and weird which is a main selling point. hes got range and good lyrics.

Mort I just now am realizing your av is a pair of hands tossing a wee babe in the air. Thought for the longest time it was a dude with three arms, two legs, and his torso missing
