I did a full orbit :D
I found the third full spin a really tough slog and I'm just wondering how this can make any sort of inroad into my regular listening now. The moments I enjoy are really fleeting, surrounded by long passages of music I care very little for.
The last two songs are probably my favourite 'run' of music here.

yeah the end is great, they should have really cut this thing down a lot, i feel it lacks a bit of effort and heart as well tbh

Dropped this down to a 4, but I still like it a lot.

The pay off to sit through the whole thing is just not worth it for me, though it is all fairly pleasant

I still get a big kick out of it as a whole. Whether that will stand the test of time remains to be seen.

For my sins...I'm spinning this a fourth time now. This could be the last full spin...

It's definitely an album to be pared down for me; I can easily make a 10 track version of this that I could listen to nonstop.

I think the problem is that this was never meant to be an album as such.

My impression of 'Jupiter' is the same...that if 'Age of Adz' didn't exist I'd find it fascinating. As it is it just sounds so darn familiar melodically, esp the Sufjan vocals
The final 2 minutes of the song I'm finding on visit number 4...a little obnoxious, sadly.

so violently artistic that I'm about to drop it another .5

'Venus', female you see, so Suffy sings in his best 'quivering flamingo' on this one. I think when Stevens puts on his extra 'pretty' voice it actually goes the whole way around to sounding ugly again, like too much plastic surgery.
He also tries to sing 'nymphomania' seductively and I tittered. This is a 'skip'...but I'm not gonna skip today. I'm serious about this.

"Red alert captain, Stevens is preparing to engulf Uranus"
This is very floaty, all the elements are pleasurable, for this record this is as subtle as you get. Pretty but nothing to hold onto.

Ok, we've arrived at 'Mars' - I'm reaching a familiar level of fatigue at this stage. The ending when the drums came in roused me slightly...but only slightly. Everything feels 'soupy' and nondescript at this point in the album.

Venus, Mars, and Saturn are my least favorite full songs on here, despite all having some really nice parts but the distorted robotic vocals have never been my thing. I also haven't listened to The Age of Adz in a long time, so I can't comment on the similarities until I give it a re-listen.

'Black Energy'/'Sun' are 'ambient' numbers, I'm not sure they need to clock in at a combined 9 minutes in length.
2.5/5
'Moon' is one of the more unique songs among the tracks included here, seems like music to play in an alien hippy commune, think Avatar or something like that. Lots of animal like squelches, purrs and hisses. Sure, I quite like it.

'Pluto'/'Kuiper Belt' are the two most disjointed moments on the whole album imo, they could be classed as the number one biggest failure due to this...but perversely they also inject some interest for being so 'out there'.
2.5/5
'Saturn' was the obvious track to release in advance of the rest of the album, it's the most conventional thing here with its strangled auto tune and almost catchy drum track that enters half way through. It even has a chorus of sorts.

The start of 'Earth' is nice enough but it doesn't really get going until the 8th minute but what follows is all really interesting, including the near whispered/drone section that closes it.
4/5
'Mercury' just goes to prove I'll take regular ol' Sufjan over 'experimental' Sufjan 9 times out of 10. This is a faith restorer of the highest degree, dangerously close to a 5/5 track even. Almost a Radiohead quality to the track after the three minute mark.
F"ck it, 5/5
