This fucks.

If anything felt like a genuine accumalation of modern death metal and osdm, this is it.

"Every pound of flesh, every bleeding wretch..."

This will probably be my AOTY for metal in general.

Understandable. It's not that I vehemently disagree with you, it's because I want to learn and improve, should I be foolish enough to attempt one of these things again.

Hmm, not a stickler for genres, but this is definitely modern metal to my ears and not really getting any OSDM vibes. I'm honestly surprised I like this as much as I do at the moment, because I normally don't dig a lot of modern stuff like this.

Plus I agree with Ega's rev. First listen was great but exaustive. Shit gets better on each listen. Jumped from 4.3 to a solid 4.6 for me.

It's almost easy listening by the +10th time.

Not sure why it makes such a brutal first impression, but the proggy elements really come out later.

Broken men on broken shores

Lowly pawns in an eternal war

Blood in the water, death on the sea

Feeding the Other, feasting with glee

Okay, so if we're doing the lyrics thing, there's something I noticed about 'World's Within'. I was jamming it, and was like wait did he just say "Flame, Dear Flame"? like Steady Hand McDuff's favorite phrase from Dark Souls 2? Turns out he did. Turns out the entire lyrical theme matches the plot for Dark Souls 2 as well. "The first age of man, heralded by primordial embers" yep. "the dead stray from their graves, forgotten who they were. the flame can rekindle them all" yep. "Hacking and smashing, I'm clawing my way. Gods mark my path" Okay yep definitely Dark Souls. "Is it true, our lives are all born of the first sin and we just repeat it in vain" like Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin? Case closed.

"Surrounded by darkness closing in

I've traveled far to the land of light and sun

To inherit what's mine

The first age of humanity

Heralded by primordial embers

Set upon by festering rot

Don't let it grow, the dead stray from their graves

Forgotten who they were

The flame can rekindle them all

Hacking and smashing, I'm clawing my way

Gods mark my path

The last laugh is for he that burns

When the world rots, we set it afire

A kindness for those in the next

Is it true, our lives are all born

Of the first sin and we just repeat it in vain

Flame, dear flame

How brightly you burn I give you my all

Your heat let us flourish

But now you waver and falter

The power of flame allures us and we attempt to harness

In the end, it is all beyond our reach

The power of the gods is gone"
